Timeline

StockX publishes no timeline for handling a deceased user's account, because it publishes no deceased-user process. The published timings that bear on it are these: seller payouts run on a daily cycle that closes at approximately 6:30 PM ET with payouts issued at approximately 7:00 PM ET, and on the Verified Marketplace an order becomes eligible for that day's cycle once the item passes verification; an Access/Portability or Deletion/Erasure request submitted through the StockX Trust Center is completed within 30 days of confirmation; and StockX states that for email you can expect a response within 24 hours. Anything handled by Customer Service as a one-off depends on their response time. Two clocks do run against the estate in the meantime: Flex storage fees accrue monthly after the first 30 days, and StockX Credit expires twelve months after it is issued.

StockX publishes no death, deceased-user, estate or inheritance provision anywhere — not in its Terms and not in its help centre (a corpus-complete scan of all 116 published help articles returned zero hits across the full synonym set; see dataQualityNotes). What the Terms do say is that the account is personal and cannot be handed on: "You may not use another user's account or password at any time without that user's express permission, and you may not transfer or assign your account to another person." So the account itself cannot be inherited. The value attached to it, though, is not forfeited. Section 28 of the Terms provides that "StockX LLC holds your funds as custodian in one or more pooled custodial bank accounts for your benefit, subject to a Client Money Account Agreement with our bank service provider. StockX maintains a ledger of your ownership interest," and that a user "may withdraw available funds at any time while your account is in good standing and not subject to a hold." The same section provides that on termination "any remaining balance, less amounts owed, may be transferred to your registered bank account once authentication requirements are fulfilled, subject to any legally required holds." A StockX Balance is therefore the account holder's money held in custody, and there is a published route by which it leaves the platform on closure — but there is no published procedure for a survivor to invoke, so an estate's request is handled by Customer Service case by case rather than under a policy.

How to request a transfer

Follow these steps to initiate a transfer of StockX balance after the account holder's death:

1
Report the death to StockX Customer Service (live chat, phone for US users, or email) and ask what StockX requires from an executor or administrator. StockX publishes no deceased-user process, so the written request you send is the process. Do not sign in with, share or use the deceased person's StockX credentials: the Terms make the account holder responsible for all activity under the account, prohibit use of another user's account or password, and the account cannot be transferred to you in any event.
2
Ask Customer Service to identify, in writing, everything the account is holding, so nothing is closed before it is inventoried:
  • The StockX Balance in the StockX Wallet (seller payout proceeds) and any payout still pending
  • Any StockX Credit balance, noting that Credit expires twelve months after it is issued and cannot be exchanged for cash
  • Any active Asks (items listed for sale) and active Offers (open bids to buy)
  • Any item already shipped to StockX and awaiting or undergoing verification
  • Any items held in StockX custody under the Flex seller programme or Store at StockX
3
Ask StockX to stop the account transacting, and explain why it is urgent. An Ask is a binding offer to sell: if it matches while nobody can ship the item, StockX may charge a $15 penalty fee deducted from seller payouts or charged to the card on file, and may restrict or suspend the account. StockX publishes a Seller Vacation Mode that pauses active Asks, and its own guidance is that a seller who cannot ship should enable it before an item sells. An open Offer is the mirror risk on the buying side: it becomes a binding purchase the moment it matches a seller's Ask, and can charge the card on file.
4
Ask StockX to cancel the open Offers and Asks. StockX states an Offer can be cancelled "any time before it matches a seller's Ask" and an Ask "at any point before it matches with a buyer's Offer," and that once either matches the account is committed. A sale that has already matched is a different matter: StockX says a seller-initiated cancellation on the Listings or Live Marketplace carries a $15 penalty fee, and that Customer Service can assist with those cancellations.
5
Deal with any physical goods StockX is holding, because these are estate property sitting in someone else's warehouse and they cost money to leave there. Flex items are held in StockX verification centres and authorized warehouses, and StockX publishes storage fees (in the US: free for the first 30 days, $1 per month from 31 to 90 days, $2 per month beyond 90 days) plus a $5 per item return fee. Store at StockX items are ones where ownership has already transferred to the account holder while StockX retains physical custody; StockX publishes a Request Return route in StockX Pro to have them shipped to the address on file, with a deferred buyer fee, shipping fee and any applicable sales tax charged on the return. Ask StockX how a return is authorised when the account holder has died.
6
Ask how StockX will release the StockX Balance to the estate. Section 28 of the Terms records that StockX holds the funds as custodian "for your benefit" with a ledger of the user's ownership interest, that available funds are withdrawable while the account is in good standing, and that on termination any remaining balance less amounts owed "may be transferred to your registered bank account once authentication requirements are fulfilled." StockX publishes no procedure for doing that at the request of an estate, so ask what it requires and what it will do; be prepared to supply a certified death certificate and documentation of your authority over the estate.
7
Only once the balance, the goods and the listings are resolved, deal with the account itself. An Access/Portability request through the StockX Trust Center returns a copy of the personal data StockX holds; a Deletion/Erasure request permanently deletes the account and associated data. StockX states requests are completed within 30 days. Deletion is irreversible, and StockX retains some transaction records afterwards for tax and legal reasons, so do not submit it until you have what the estate needs.

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Documentation showing your authority over the estate (for example, Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration)
  • The decedent's StockX account email address
  • The decedent's first and last name, and the state or country of residence (the Trust Center request form asks for all three)
  • Government-issued photo ID of the person making the request

Frequently asked questions

No. StockX publishes no deceased-user, estate or inheritance process. A scan of all 116 articles in its published help centre, and of the full Terms and Conditions of Use, found no reference to death, a deceased user, an estate, an executor, an administrator, an heir, a next of kin, probate or inheritance anywhere. The practical route is to contact StockX Customer Service (live chat, phone for US users, or email) to report the death, ask what the account is holding, and ask how StockX will deal with each part of it. Expect to provide a certified death certificate and documentation of your authority over the estate, such as Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.

No. The Terms state that "you may not transfer or assign your account to another person," and grant only a personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the services. The account itself cannot be inherited. That is separate from the value attached to it: the StockX Balance is the account holder's money, which the Terms say StockX holds as custodian for the user's benefit, so the estate can ask about releasing it even though the account cannot pass to anyone.

By asking StockX, not by logging in. Section 28 of the Terms provides that StockX holds a user's funds "as custodian in one or more pooled custodial bank accounts for your benefit" with a ledger of the user's ownership interest, that available funds are withdrawable while the account is in good standing, and that on termination any remaining balance less amounts owed "may be transferred to your registered bank account once authentication requirements are fulfilled." There is no published procedure for an estate to invoke that, so the request goes to Customer Service with a death certificate and proof of your authority, and StockX decides how to handle it. Do not use the deceased person's credentials: the Terms prohibit using another person's account or password and make the account holder responsible for everything done under the account.

A sale already matched continues. On the Verified Marketplace a payout becomes eligible once the item passes verification, and StockX runs one payout cycle daily, closing at approximately 6:30 PM ET with payouts issued around 7:00 PM ET. Open Asks and Offers are the urgent part. StockX states an Ask can be cancelled "at any point before it matches with a buyer's Offer" and an Offer "any time before it matches a seller's Ask," and that once either matches the account is committed. An Ask that matches when nobody can ship exposes the estate to a $15 penalty fee, which StockX says may be deducted from seller payouts or charged to the card on file, plus account restriction or suspension. StockX also publishes a Seller Vacation Mode that pauses active Asks, though it does not cancel sales already in progress and does not affect Flex items.

They remain the estate's property, and they need attention. Under the Flex programme sellers ship items to StockX verification centres and authorized warehouses where they are "verified and securely held in inventory" until they sell; StockX publishes US storage fees of free for the first 30 days, $1 per month from 31 to 90 days and $2 per month beyond 90 days, plus a $5 per item return fee. Under Store at StockX, a buyer takes ownership after verification while StockX retains physical custody in a Flex facility, and StockX publishes a Request Return route in StockX Pro to have stored items shipped to the address on file, with a deferred buyer fee, shipping fee and any applicable sales tax charged on return. Ask Customer Service what it requires to authorise a return when the account holder has died, and ask for the fees to be paused while that is sorted out.

StockX states that StockX Credit "cannot be exchanged for cash," that it is nontransferable, and that it expires twelve months from the date it was applied to the account, after which it cannot be reissued. Credit is a different thing from the StockX Balance, which holds seller proceeds and is withdrawable to a registered bank account. An estate can ask about the Credit, but should not count on recovering it, and should deal with the Balance and any items in StockX custody first.

Last, not first. After the StockX Balance has been released, any items in StockX custody returned or relisted, and open Asks and Offers cancelled, submit a Deletion/Erasure request through the StockX Trust Center at stockx.com/data-access-request. StockX states these requests are completed within 30 days, and Customer Service can separately remove stored billing and shipping addresses and cards on file. Deletion is irreversible, and StockX says some account information is retained afterwards for legal and security reasons, including transaction records required for tax purposes. Request the account's data through the Access/Portability route before deleting anything.

After the transfer is complete, the recipient can use the balance according to the program's standard terms. Document the deceased account holder's details to make this process easier for your executor or family.
