What to do
If a Minecraft account holder has passed away, here is what to do:
- •The Microsoft account's Minecraft purchase and order history, so the estate can inventory what was owned
- •A discretionary transfer of the game license, Marketplace content, and unspent Minecoin balance to a named survivor's Microsoft account (the EULA and the Microsoft Services Agreement foreclose transfer, so this is a request, not an entitlement)
- •A refund of the unspent Minecoin balance and of any subscription charged after the date of death (the Minecoins terms say all purchases are final, so this too is discretionary)
- •That the account not be closed for inactivity or purged while the estate is being opened
- •United States and most regions: a non-criminal subpoena or court order must be formally served on Microsoft's registered agent in the requesting party's state or region. Microsoft states it "is unable to respond to faxed or emailed requests for such matters."
- •Europe: served on Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd, 70 Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2, Ireland.
- •Germany: contact Microsoft customer support with a copy of the death certificate, a copy of the deceased's ID or passport, a certificate of inheritance (Erbschein) or other court documentation proving sole heirship, and a copy of your ID/passport or a signed power of attorney.

Often not. The EULA confirms that the worlds a player builds are their own content, and Java Edition worlds are stored as ordinary files in the .minecraft/saves folder on the player's computer — they can be copied off with no account access at all. Bedrock Edition worlds saved to a device can be exported from the game's Settings menu on that device. The exception is Realms: cloud-hosted worlds can only be downloaded from inside the owning account, and when the subscription lapses the Realm goes offline.
Nothing is owed. The Minecoins terms state that "All purchases for Minecoins are final and cannot be refunded," and cancelling a Realms, Realms Plus, or Game Pass subscription stops future charges without refunding past ones.
