How to protect your Midjourney accounts

Here are 6 steps to protect and manage your Midjourney accounts while the account is active:

Download and back up the assets that matter. Images and videos stay on Midjourney's servers after a subscription lapses, but an account deletion removes them within 30 days of the reconsideration window closing, and no one else can get into the account after your death. Local copies are the only holding that does not depend on Midjourney.

Write down the account email and subscription tier for your executor, so the recurring charge can be stopped and the account identified. Do not write down the password: no one at Midjourney needs it, and an executor should not be signing in as you.

Keep a record of where your Midjourney assets are used commercially (prints, merchandise, client work, licensing). The Terms grant a subscriber ownership of the assets they create and that ownership survives cancellation, so the assets can pass to your beneficiaries even though the account cannot — but only if someone knows they exist and where they live.

Know which plan you were on when you generated. Free (non-subscriber) users receive only a non-commercial Creative Commons license and do not own their outputs; ownership under the Terms attaches to paid subscribers. If a business with more than $1,000,000 USD a year in revenue is involved, a Pro or Mega plan is required to own the assets, so record the plan tier a successor business would need to evidence.

If you use Stealth Mode (Pro and Mega plans), remember that Stealth content is not visible on the public Explore page. Anything your family might otherwise have found on the site will not be findable, which makes local backups and an inventory list the only path to it.

Note in your estate documents that Midjourney has no bereavement channel and no account transfer. A written request from your executor is the only route, and Midjourney is under no obligation to answer it.

Should you save your passwords for your family?

Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:

  • Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
  • It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
  • Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).

No. Midjourney's published subscription-transfer policy states that a subscription and image history cannot be transferred, and that the image gallery, image count history, and other account-specific details will not move between accounts. Midjourney may in some cases offer a credit transfer when an existing user needs to subscribe on a different account, but that is a billing courtesy during life, not a death or estate mechanism. Only one user may use the Services per registered account, and each user may have only one account.

The assets and the account page remain reachable after cancellation. What stops is the ability to generate new work and the use of subscription features; existing images and videos stay on Midjourney's servers and can still be viewed and downloaded through the web interface. Permanent removal requires a separate data-deletion request, which is irreversible after its reconsideration window closes.

Recording that a Midjourney account exists, alongside other accounts, gives a fiduciary the information needed to reach the operator through its official process.

Midjourney does not offer beneficiary designations, so there is no program-level mechanism for directing accounts to a specific person at death.
