What happens to HBO Max accounts when the owner dies
Warner Bros. Discovery has a formal process for transferring accounts after an account holder dies

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and the account stays accessible until then. HBO Max publishes no processing timeline for estate requests, because it publishes no estate process. A profile transfer has to happen while the source account still has an active subscription, so it is time-limited by the cancellation. If the subscription is billed through a third party, that provider must be contacted separately to stop the charges.
(General customer service)
HBO Max accounts are non-transferable under the US Terms of Use, Section 3.2 of which provides that "Your Subscription grants you a limited, revocable, non-transferrable license to access the Platform and the Platform's Content solely for your personal, non-commercial use, and only on the Platform in accordance with these Terms." The closing assignment clause repeats the point: "Your rights and obligations under this Agreement are non-transferrable." There is no formal estate transfer or inheritance process, HBO Max publishes no dedicated bereavement page, and its US Privacy Policy describes no deceased-user or authorized-agent route. To cancel a deceased person's account, contact HBO Max customer support at 1-855-442-6629 or support@HBOMax.com, both published in Section 3.7 of the Terms of Use, or through the Help Center. Support representatives can work with family members or legal representatives who provide a death certificate and proof of authority to close the account. Whether HBO Max will do anything beyond closing the account is handled case by case; the Terms of Use do not contemplate transfer of the account itself. Two narrower paths are documented. First, HBO Max publishes a profile-transfer feature: an Adult profile, including its avatar, watch history, My List, PIN, settings, and recommendations, can be copied to a new or existing HBO Max account, provided the account holding the profile still has an active subscription, both accounts are in the same country or region, and the destination account has fewer than five profiles. Kids profiles cannot be transferred. Second, Section 2.4 states that subscription fees are non-refundable and that HBO Max does not provide refunds, credit, or prorated billing for cancelled subscriptions, but adds that "A Subscription Provider may choose to offer refunds, discounts or other consideration as a discretionary accommodation." The Extra Member Add-On is the one documented automatic refund: the help center states that if there is remaining time on the add-on when the base plan expires, the account owner receives a prorated refund for the remaining days. Where the subscription is billed through a third party (Apple, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Samsung, Xumo, or a TV/ISP provider), refunds follow that provider's policy and cancellation must be done through that provider.
How to request a transfer
Follow these steps to initiate a transfer of HBO Max accounts after the account holder's death:
- •The billing provider is shown at the top of the Subscription screen in the HBO Max app, or at hbomax.com/subscription, and also appears on the card or bank statement
- •If billed directly by HBO Max (WarnerMedia Direct), the cancellation is made with HBO Max
- •If billed through a third party (Apple, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Samsung, Xumo, or a TV/ISP provider), the cancellation must be made through that provider — cancelling with HBO Max alone does not stop those charges
- •HBO Max publishes a profile-transfer feature at help.hbomax.com/us/Answer/Detail/000002602 that copies an Adult profile — avatar, watch history, My List, PIN, settings, recommendations — into a new or existing HBO Max account
- •The account holding the profile must still have an active subscription for the transfer to run, so the request has to come before cancellation
- •Both accounts must be in the same country or region, the destination account must have fewer than five profiles, and Kids profiles cannot be transferred
- •The executor asks HBO Max support to run or authorize the transfer rather than signing in as the account holder
- •Email support@HBOMax.com or call 1-855-442-6629, both published in Section 3.7 of the Terms of Use
- •Or use the Contact Us control in the lower-right corner of any page at help.hbomax.com, which offers chat and a contact form
- •State the account email address and, if known, the member ID
- •Death certificate
- •Proof of identity and authority to act on behalf of the deceased (executor papers, letters testamentary, or family relationship documentation)
- •The account email address and, if known, the member ID
Required Documents
- Death certificate
- Proof of identity of the person making the request
- Proof of authority to act on behalf of the deceased (executor papers, letters testamentary, will, or family relationship documentation)
- Account email address and/or member ID associated with the HBO Max account
- Billing source information (HBO Max direct bill through WarnerMedia Direct, or Apple, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Samsung, Xumo, or a TV/ISP provider)
- The destination HBO Max account email address, if a survivor wants an Adult profile transferred before the subscription is cancelled
Timeline
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and the account stays accessible until then. HBO Max publishes no processing timeline for estate requests, because it publishes no estate process. A profile transfer has to happen while the source account still has an active subscription, so it is time-limited by the cancellation. If the subscription is billed through a third party, that provider must be contacted separately to stop the charges.
Frequently asked questions
Contact HBO Max customer support at 1-855-442-6629 or support@HBOMax.com, both published in Section 3.7 of the Terms of Use, or use the Contact Us control at help.hbomax.com. Explain that the account holder has passed away and provide a death certificate and proof of your authority to act on their behalf. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. If the subscription is billed through a third party (Apple, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Samsung, Xumo, or a TV/ISP provider), you must also cancel through that billing provider, because cancelling with HBO Max does not stop those charges.
The account itself cannot. Section 3.2 of the Terms of Use grants a limited, revocable, non-transferrable license for personal, non-commercial use, and the closing assignment clause states that rights and obligations under the agreement are non-transferrable. A profile is a different question: HBO Max publishes a feature that copies an Adult profile — avatar, watch history, My List, PIN, settings, and recommendations — into a new or existing HBO Max account. It only runs while the account holding the profile still has an active subscription, so a survivor who wants it has to ask before the subscription is cancelled. HBO Max decides whether to accommodate the request.
Profile data is lost when the account is closed, but it does not have to be. HBO Max supports transferring an Adult profile to another HBO Max account, which carries over the avatar, watch history, My List, PIN, settings, and recommendations. The conditions are published: the source account must still have an active subscription, both accounts must be in the same country or region, and the destination account must have fewer than five profiles. Kids profiles cannot be transferred. Once the subscription ends, the transfer is no longer available and the profile data goes with the account.
Not as a matter of right. Section 2.4 of the Terms of Use states that subscription fees are non-refundable and that HBO Max does not provide refunds, credit, or prorated billing for cancelled subscriptions, and the help center repeats that there is a no-refund policy for subscriptions billed through WarnerMedia Direct. The same clause adds that a Subscription Provider "may choose to offer refunds, discounts or other consideration as a discretionary accommodation," so the estate can ask. One refund is documented rather than discretionary: if there is remaining time on an Extra Member Add-On when the base plan expires, the account owner gets a prorated refund for the remaining days. One-Time Purchases are non-refundable. Where the subscription is billed through a third party, that provider's refund policy governs.
Access ends with the subscription. Section 2.2 of the Terms of Use provides for One-Time Purchases — pay-per-view events and other content outside the subscription — states that they are non-refundable, and states that if the subscription is cancelled, paused, or otherwise terminated for any reason, access to that content is lost. The Terms are explicit that the content is licensed, not sold. What the estate can still get is the record: the charges are billed separately from the base plan, so an executor should ask HBO Max for the billing and purchase history before the account is closed, both to explain unfamiliar charges and to complete the estate inventory.
Access continues until the subscription is cancelled and the current billing period ends. After that, each person needs their own HBO Max subscription. Extra Member accounts tied to the primary plan also lose access when the base plan expires, though the account owner receives a prorated refund for any remaining days on the add-on. A survivor who wants to keep a profile should ask about a profile transfer before the subscription is cancelled, because the transfer only runs while the source account is active.
No. HBO Max publishes no dedicated bereavement page and no formal estate claims process, and its US Privacy Policy describes no deceased-user or authorized-agent route. General customer support handles deceased account holder requests, through support@HBOMax.com, the 1-855-442-6629 line, or the Contact Us control at help.hbomax.com. Be prepared to provide a death certificate and proof of authority to act on behalf of the deceased.
The recipient can use transferred accounts under the program's normal terms. Keeping the deceased account holder's account number and contact details on file simplifies this process for the executor or surviving family.
