Estate planning as a FRONTIER Miles account holder

FRONTIER Miles is the loyalty program of Frontier Airlines, an ultra-low-cost U.S. carrier headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Members earn miles on Frontier flights and can redeem them for award travel. The program has four elite status tiers -- Silver (10,000 Elite Status Points), Gold (20,000), Platinum (50,000), and Diamond (100,000) -- with perks such as free checked bags, seat selection, and Family Pooling eligibility. Miles expire at the end of the 12-month period after the last accrual activity unless the member holds an active Frontier Airlines World Mastercard. The program offers Family Pooling that lets a group of up to 8 members combine miles, and the Terms and Conditions include a documented estate transfer policy allowing miles to pass to heirs on death with proper documentation.

FRONTIER Miles allows miles to be transferred to the estate or heirs after the account holder's death. A death certificate and supporting documentation are required to initiate the transfer.

FRONTIER Miles provides a pooling or family sharing option for miles. FRONTIER Miles Family Pooling allows a group of up to 8 members to combine and share miles. The pool head (the member who creates the pool) must hold either a Frontier Airlines World Mastercard or FRONTIER Miles Elite Silver status or higher. The head controls all redemptions from the pooled balance and can remove contributors at any time. Pool members do not need to be family -- the program states friends and family may be invited. Frontier advertises "no minimums, maximums or hidden fees" on contributions. Pool contributors can leave a pool at their account holder's discretion; a 90-day cooling-off period applies after leaving a pool before the member can join or create another. Miles purchased or gifted through Frontier's partner Points.com can also be added to a pool.

What happens at death

Per the FRONTIER Miles Terms and Conditions, miles can be transferred upon the death of a member. The executor or heir must provide (i) a certified copy of the death certificate of the member or (ii) a letter from the executor. When there are multiple executors or heirs, miles are divided as directed by court documents. Heirs who do not have a FRONTIER Miles account may enroll in the program to receive their share, or they may submit written permission to waive their rights, in which case their portion is divided among the remaining heirs. No fee for post-death transfers is specified in the published Terms and Conditions.
