Figma, Inc. does not guarantee transfer of accounts after death. Lifetime planning provides options for managing accounts and controlling who has access to them.

How to protect your Figma accounts

7 lifetime planning steps for your Figma accounts:

1
Transfer team ownership to a trusted co-owner or partner while alive. Only the current Owner can initiate the transfer, from team Settings > View members, by changing a member's permission to "Owner." On Professional plans, update the billing payment method first, since billing does not transfer automatically.
2
For Organization or Enterprise plans: ensure at least one additional Organization admin exists who can manage members and recover draft files independently. Document who that admin is so the estate knows who to contact.
3
Move critical design files out of personal drafts and into shared team projects. Files that live in personal drafts are only accessible to the account holder; files in a team project remain accessible to every member.
4
Export key design files periodically. Figma uses proprietary formats (.fig, .jam, .deck) that cannot be opened outside Figma. Export as SVG, PDF, or PNG to preserve content in an open, portable format.
5
Document your Figma account email address, team names, and any organization URLs for your executor, along with the name of a trusted second admin who can act quickly.
6
If your account holds billing for a paid team or organization, ensure a second person has Admin-level billing access so the team does not lose service while the estate is resolving login access.
7
For solo designers on Professional with no second admin: consider publishing finished work as PDF/SVG exports to cloud storage your executor can reach, so the design IP survives even if the Figma account itself is lost.

Family sharing

A Figma team has a single Owner who controls billing, team settings, and member management. Only the current Owner can transfer ownership, and the new Owner can be any existing team member -- including a member on a free seat or with view-only access. The transfer is done from team Settings > View members by clicking the member's permissions dropdown and changing it to "Owner." The action is confirmed with a prompt, cannot be undone, and on Professional plans does not automatically update billing details -- the outgoing Owner must separately update the payment method before or after transfer. The previous Owner becomes an admin on the team. Admins can manage members and projects but cannot change billing or transfer ownership. For Organizations and Enterprise plans, admins can recover a departing member's draft files before removing them. There is no mechanism to transfer a personal (Starter/Free) account.

Should you save your passwords for your family?

Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:

  • Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
  • It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
  • Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).

Frequently asked questions

No. Figma accounts are non-transferable per the Terms of Service. However, team ownership can be transferred by the current Owner to any existing team member through team Settings > View members, including members on a free seat or view-only access. Personal (Starter/Free) accounts have no transfer mechanism.

Figma's native formats (.fig, .jam, .deck) cannot be opened in other tools. You can export individual frames or components as PNG, SVG, JPG, or PDF, but these are flat exports without layers or editability. There is no official path to convert a .fig file into a Sketch or Adobe XD file.

Recording that a Figma account exists, alongside other accounts, gives a fiduciary the information needed to reach the operator through its official process.

There is no beneficiary designation option for Figma. This account type does not support naming a recipient the way bank or investment accounts do.
