Figma is a collaborative design platform for interface design, prototyping, and developer handoff. A Figma account can hold design files (.fig), prototypes, FigJam whiteboards (.jam), Figma Slides presentations (.deck), component libraries, design systems, published Community files, plugins, and Dev Mode resources. Native file formats are proprietary and can only be opened in Figma products. Account value for an estate is the design IP itself plus any team or organization ownership the deceased held. Figma remained independent after Adobe abandoned its $20B acquisition in December 2023 and went public on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker FIG on July 31, 2025; the IPO did not change the end-user account, file ownership, or support model.
When a Figma account holder dies, their accounts may be transferred to a designated person at Figma, Inc.'s sole discretion. A transfer is not guaranteed, and satisfactory documentation is required before processing any request.

What happens at death
Figma has no published estate, bereavement, or deceased-account process. The Terms of Service grant a "limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable right" to access the Services (Section 1.1), and state that "These Terms (and your access to any of the Services) are not assignable or transferable by Customer without Figma's prior written consent" (Section 9.7). Team ownership can only be transferred by the current Owner through team Settings, which makes it a critical single point of failure if the Owner's account becomes inaccessible. Organization admins can recover a departing member's draft files before the member is removed from the organization. On termination, ToS Section 8.2 states Figma will "make all Customer Content then held by Figma available to you for electronic retrieval for a period of 30 days, but thereafter Figma may delete any stored Customer Content." There is no documented path for family members or executors to gain access to a personal Figma account or its files; Figma support triage for a deceased-account situation is handled through the general contact form.

On the Starter plan, files in personal drafts become inaccessible. On Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans, draft files from a deleted account are collected into an admin-only project so team admins can recover them. Files in shared team projects remain accessible to other team members with permission, though ownership may transfer or become ownerless. Export or transfer anything important before initiating deletion.
Published Community files remain publicly accessible even after the creator's account is deleted, and anyone who previously duplicated a file keeps their copy. To remove Community files associated with a deleted account, contact Figma Support. Unpublishing does not affect duplicates already made by other users.
FigJam (.jam) and Figma Slides (.deck) files follow the same rules as design files (.fig). Files in personal drafts are collected into an admin-only project on Professional, Organization, or Enterprise plans, or lost on Starter. Files in shared teams remain accessible to other team members. All three formats are proprietary and can only be opened in their respective Figma products.
