Planning ahead for your Chipotle points
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. points cannot be transferred and have no beneficiary option — here is what you can do while the account is active
(General customer service)
Under Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc.'s policy, points have no value after death. Every strategy for preserving Chipotle points depends on steps taken while the account holder is alive.
How to protect your Chipotle points
4 steps for managing your Chipotle points during your lifetime:
Family sharing
Chipotle Rewards has no family-pooling, points-transfer, or shared-account feature. The Terms & Conditions make points, Rewards, account status, and benefits personal to the account holder and state they "may not be sold, transferred, or assigned to, or shared with, family, friends, or others." The Terms also limit each participant to one Chipotle Rewards account. Points cannot be gifted or pooled; the only way to realize their value is for the member to redeem them for Rewards in the Rewards Exchange on the member's own account and use those Rewards on a qualifying order.
Should you save your passwords for your family?
Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:
- Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
- It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
- Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).
Frequently asked questions
Treat Chipotle Rewards as a use-them-now benefit rather than an inheritable asset. Points expire after 365 days of account inactivity, and any Reward expires 60 days after it is issued (30 days for the birthday reward), so redeem points and use Rewards promptly rather than letting a balance build up. Record the account email address and phone number where your executor can find them so the account can be identified and closed. Your sign-in credentials do not need to be shared, and there is no reason to leave them: the points are personal, non-transferable, have no cash value, and are void on account termination, so nothing of value can be moved out of the account by signing in.
An inventory listing the Chipotle account lets a fiduciary identify it and act on it through the operator's official channels.
There is no beneficiary designation option for Chipotle. This account type does not support naming a recipient the way bank or investment accounts do.
