Albertsons for U is the free grocery loyalty program shared across the Albertsons Companies banners — Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Shaw's, Tom Thumb, Randalls, and others. One for U account, tied to a registered mobile phone number and Member Card, holds the estate-relevant assets. Two distinct balances sit inside it. The loyalty currency is Points, which convert to grocery rewards (redemption typically starts at 100 Points, with tiered basket discounts such as 300 Points for $4 off and 1,000 Points for $15 off), to gas rewards (100 Points takes 10 cents off per gallon at participating fuel stations), or, for members who opt in to the automatic cash off option, to cash off at checkout (every 100 Points converts to $1 off); the for U Program Terms make Points non-transferable, of no cash value, and not a vested right. Separately, the for U Wallet holds Albertsons Cash — a stored balance made up of store credit (Account Credit), Albertsons Companies gift cards added to the Wallet and converted to Albertsons Cash, and loyalty conversions. Account Credits and gift-card balances inside Albertsons Cash do not expire, and Albertsons Cash is non-transferable between accounts and not exchangeable for cash "except as required by law." Albertsons can link multiple same-household for U accounts so their Points combine, which is the only published way savings keep benefiting a surviving household member.

Under Albertsons's terms, points are not property of the account holder and are forfeited when the account closes at death. No estate planning document—will, trust, or otherwise—can override this forfeiture.

Albertsons provides a pooling or family sharing option for points. Albertsons lets multiple for U accounts be linked together to create a household. The for U Account FAQ states: "Multiple Albertsons for U accounts can be linked together to create a household. When such accounts are linked, Points earned are combined, and the same offers will be received." Linking and unlinking run through the Albertsons Customer Support Center toll-free line at 1-877-258-2799, or through the chat feature in the for U app or website ("Need Help?" under the Account section, then "I want to manage my household/connected accounts"). This household linking is the practical way a partner or family member keeps benefiting from the savings: a surviving household member on a linked account keeps using the pooled Points. It is sharing among linked household members, not a transfer of the account, Points, or rewards to an outside person — the for U terms separately prohibit assigning, gifting, selling, or otherwise transferring Points, and Albertsons Cash "cannot be transferred to another account."

What happens at death

Albertsons for U Points and rewards are forfeited at death. The for U Program Terms state that "Points cannot be assigned, exchanged, traded, bartered, purchased, or given by gift or otherwise sold or transferred," that "Points have no cash value and are not exchangeable for cash," and that "the accumulation of points does not entitle Program Members to any vested rights." Points also expire within two calendar months, including the month they are earned, unless the member is a FreshPass subscriber (Points do not expire while a FreshPass subscription is active), so any balance is lost quickly if no household member keeps the account active. Albertsons publishes no deceased-account, estate-claim, or bereavement process for the for U loyalty program, and the for U terms — unlike some competitors' loyalty terms — contain no death or settlement clause at all. The only inheritance-adjacent continuity is a linked same-household for U account: Albertsons lets multiple household accounts be linked so their Points combine, and a surviving household member on a linked account keeps the pooled Points. That is household pooling, not an estate transfer to an outside person. The Albertsons Cash balance in the for U Wallet is a separate question from Points and is the part of the account most likely to hold real value. Albertsons Cash accumulates from store credit (Account Credit), from Albertsons Companies gift cards added to the Wallet and automatically converted into Albertsons Cash, and from loyalty conversions. Albertsons states that "Account Credits and Gift Cards do not expire," so unlike Points that balance does not lapse on a two-month clock, and it says Albertsons Cash "cannot be transferred to another account nor exchanged for cash or other merchandise, except as required by law" — a carve-out that matters because several states require a cash refund of a gift-card balance below a statutory threshold. Albertsons publishes no estate process for that balance either, so a survivor's route to it is a request to Customer Service rather than a documented claim.
