The Member Support Center at Veridian coordinates account transitions after a member's death. How each account is handled depends on its setup: POD and trust accounts transfer automatically, while solely-owned accounts typically require court authorization through Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.

Death claims at Veridian can be started through an online portal, which streamlines the initial notification and document upload. Phone and mail options are also available.

Death claim process

Follow these steps to file a death claim with Veridian:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Veridian Credit Union at 800-235-3228 or visit any branch location to notify the credit union of the member's death
2
Submit a certified copy of the death certificate; individual accounts are restricted upon notification
3
Settlement depends on the account structure:
  • POD beneficiary: beneficiary provides government-issued ID and death certificate to claim funds
  • Joint account with right of survivorship: surviving owner retains full access to funds
  • No beneficiary or surviving joint owner: funds become part of the estate and go through probate
4
For probate estates, provide legal authority:
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration issued by an Iowa or Nebraska probate court
  • Small Estate Affidavit may be accepted if the estate qualifies under applicable state law
  • Iowa: small estate affidavit available for estates under $100,000 in personal property (Iowa Code 633A.3113)
  • Nebraska: small estate affidavit available for estates under $50,000 in personal property (Neb. Rev. Stat. 30-24,125)
5
Outstanding loan balances are satisfied from estate proceeds before disbursement to beneficiaries or the estate

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for beneficiary, joint owner, or personal representative
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD beneficiary; issued by probate court)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under Iowa or Nebraska law)
  • Trust documents (if trust is named as beneficiary)

Veridian requires a certified death certificate to begin the account settlement process. Federal benefit payments (Social Security, VA) received after death may be returned to the government. Contact the credit union as soon as possible to begin the process and prevent complications. Any outstanding loans are satisfied from estate proceeds.

How long the process takes at Veridian: 30-90 days depending on account structure and estate complexity. The most common reason for delays is missing or incomplete documentation, so submitting everything upfront is the best way to keep things moving.

Documentation required by Veridian includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for beneficiary, joint owner, or personal representative, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD beneficiary; issued by probate court), along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Visit any Veridian branch with government-issued photo ID or call 800-235-3228. You can add Payable on Death (POD) beneficiaries to deposit accounts including checking, savings, money market, and certificates. A testamentary account is a POD or revocable trust account that designates beneficiaries to receive the account balance at death, bypassing probate. Provide the beneficiary's full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship, along with percentage allocations for multiple beneficiaries.

A testamentary account at Veridian is a payable-on-death (POD) or revocable trust account maintained according to the account owner's instructions to pay the account balance to named beneficiaries at death, bypassing probate. Both POD designations and trust-titled accounts qualify as testamentary accounts under Veridian's classification.

Contact Veridian at 800-235-3228 or visit any branch to report the death of a member. POD beneficiaries provide a certified death certificate and government-issued ID to claim funds. Joint accounts with right of survivorship pass to the surviving owner. If there is no beneficiary or surviving joint owner, funds become part of the estate and go through probate. Iowa allows a small estate affidavit for estates under $100,000 in personal property; Nebraska allows one for estates under $50,000.

Veridian's Member Support Center can be reached by phone at 1-800-235-3228 for questions throughout the claims process.

Multiple Veridian accounts may mean multiple claims. Some account types can be processed together, but others require their own documentation. Check with the Member Support Center to confirm what applies.
