After a Tower FCU member dies, the Member Service Center (Death Claims) manages the transfer of accounts. POD-designated and trust-owned accounts pass directly to beneficiaries. Accounts held solely in the member's name may require probate court documents—Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration—before funds can be released.

To start a claim, contact Tower FCU by phone at 301-497-7000 or email documentation to memberservices@towerfcu.org. You will need the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate.

Death claim process

Here is the step-by-step death claim process at Tower FCU:

Filing a claim

1
Notify Tower FCU of the member death
  • Call the Member Service Center at 301-497-7000 or toll-free at 866-56-TOWER (866-568-6937)
  • Alternatively, visit any branch location in person
  • Provide the deceased member name, account number (if known), and date of death
  • Tower may continue to honor transactions until notified of a member death; after notification, Tower may honor transactions authorized by the deceased for up to ten days unless instructed otherwise
2
Submit required documentation
  • Provide a certified copy of the death certificate
  • For joint accounts: surviving joint owner may continue using the account with unrestricted access
  • For POD/trust accounts: beneficiaries present government-issued photo ID matching the designation
  • For accounts without POD or joint owner: provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the court
  • For trust-titled accounts: provide trust documents and trustee identification
  • Download the Deceased Member Guide at https://www.towerfcu.org/getmedia/9c357f86-78af-4904-bb6c-20a0fb16e8f0/Deceased_Member_Guide.pdf
3
Distribution and account settlement
  • Joint accounts: surviving owner continues account access immediately
  • POD/trust accounts: funds distributed to designated beneficiaries in equal shares after verification
  • IRA accounts: beneficiaries notified and funds distributed per beneficiary designation; Inherited IRA accounts available
  • Accounts without POD or joint ownership: the account must be closed by surviving parties or Tower will close it within a reasonable timeframe and distribute the balance equally
  • Insurance claims (TruStage): file separately through the TruStage claims process
  • Investment accounts (LPL Financial): file a separate death claim through Tower Wealth Management

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary, executor, or trustee
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (when account has no POD designation or joint owner)
  • Complete trust document or Certificate of Trust (when trust is named beneficiary)
  • Small estate affidavit (for estates under the applicable small estate threshold)

Contact Tower FCU as soon as possible after a member death. A Deceased Member Guide is available at https://www.towerfcu.org/getmedia/9c357f86-78af-4904-bb6c-20a0fb16e8f0/Deceased_Member_Guide.pdf. Tower is not obligated to notify any beneficiary of the existence of any account or the vesting of a beneficiary interest, except as otherwise provided by law. After notification of death, Tower may honor transactions authorized by the deceased for up to ten days unless instructed otherwise by a surviving party. For TruStage insurance claims, file separately through TruStage. For investment accounts through Tower Wealth Management (LPL Financial), a separate death claim process applies.

Processing timelines at Tower FCU: Joint accounts transfer immediately. POD and IRA beneficiary accounts are typically processed within 5-10 business days after receipt of all required documents. Estate accounts requiring probate documentation may take 30-90 days depending on court processing. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Tower FCU requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified copy of the death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary, executor, or trustee, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (when account has no POD designation or joint owner), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Tower FCU's Member Service Center (Death Claims) can be reached by phone at 866-568-6937, email at memberservices@towerfcu.org, and fax at 301-497-8930 for questions throughout the claims process.

When the deceased had multiple Tower FCU accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Member Service Center (Death Claims) can clarify what's needed for each account type.
