Preparing your PenFed accounts for estate transfer involves two key steps: designating beneficiaries on each account and, where appropriate, retitling accounts into a trust. Because PenFed is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership bypass probate entirely.

Across 10 product types, PenFed accounts vary in how they transfer at death. The sections below walk through Payable on Death (POD) designations, trust funding options, and which products support each method.

1
Log in to PenFed Online Banking at home.penfed.org and open your account settings:
  • Add or remove beneficiaries on a deposit/share account
  • Provide each beneficiary's name, Social Security number, physical address, and percentage allocation
2
Review and confirm the designation; the change takes effect when PenFed receives it
3
IRA beneficiaries are handled on a separate paper form (Form 732) — they are not part of the deposit-account designation

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • POD designation is available on deposit accounts; PenFed collects beneficiary detail partly to determine NCUA insurance coverage, and without it an account is insured as an individual or joint account
  • A trust can be named beneficiary of both share accounts (Form 13) and IRAs (Form 732)
  • Form 733 requires the surviving beneficiary to notify PenFed immediately upon the death of a designated primary IRA beneficiary
  • PenFed does not accept a faxed power of attorney — an original or certified copy must be mailed, together with a notarized Statement of Indemnity (Form L-12) and the POA Agent's Affidavit (Form 172)
