Estate planning at Pawtucket CU

How to protect 16 Pawtucket CU accounts — manage beneficiaries in-branch, fund a trust in-branch, and file death claims

Brand change

Pawtucket Credit Union rebranded as Coastal1 Credit Union in 2022. This is a name change, not a merger or acquisition: the same member-owned credit union continues, and account ownership, POD beneficiary designations, joint titling, and trust-titled accounts established under the Pawtucket Credit Union name remain in force. There is no successor institution -- use Coastal1 channels (coastal1.org, 401-722-2212) for all account, beneficiary, and estate matters.

The procedures below reflect Pawtucket CU's accounts. Account servicing may transfer as the change takes effect.

Pawtucket CU offers 16 accounts, each with its own rules for what happens when a member dies. As a membership-based credit union, Pawtucket CU operates 19 branches under the Coastal1 brand (2024 Annual Report roster): 18 in Rhode Island -- Pawtucket (1200 Central Ave headquarters, 540 Broadway, 571 Smithfield Ave), Johnston, Cumberland, Smithfield, Providence (Wayland Square), North Providence, East Providence (two), Bristol, Cranston (two), Warwick (two), East Greenwich, North Kingstown, and Wakefield -- plus one in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The Johnston branch opened in January 2024. IRAs, club accounts, and beneficiary designations are opened and updated at a branch rather than online. Some transfer automatically to a named beneficiary, others can be held in a trust, and a few may require probate if no plan is in place.

Pawtucket CU handles beneficiary designations in branch, by mail, and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

Pawtucket CU has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Coastal1 accepts trust accounts for eligible deposit products including checking, savings, money market, and certificates of deposit. There is no online path: retitling, beneficiary designations, and IRAs are all handled in branch or by phone. Visit any Coastal1 branch or call the Retail Services Department at 401-722-2212 with the complete trust document or a Certification of Trust, government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust tax identification number (TIN/EIN). An IRA cannot be retitled into a trust; instead the Traditional IRA or Roth IRA can name the trust on an IRA beneficiary designation, which is also completed at a branch. Consult a tax advisor first, since federal distribution rules for trust-beneficiary IRAs are restrictive.
