Preparing your Numerica accounts for estate transfer involves two key steps: designating beneficiaries on each account and, where appropriate, retitling accounts into a trust. Because Numerica is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership bypass probate entirely.

With 15 product types, Numerica offers a range of transfer options. Some accounts support Payable on Death (POD) designations, others can be retitled into a trust, and some require probate if no beneficiary is designated. The sections below break down each step.

1
Visit a Numerica branch with a government-issued photo ID. Branch list: https://www.numericacu.com/branches
2
Ask to add or update the payable-on-death (POD) beneficiary on the account record. Numerica does not publish a downloadable POD form — the designation is made on the account record itself, so it has to be done through Numerica rather than on a form you fill out at home.
3
Have the beneficiary details ready:
  • Full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number for each beneficiary
  • The share of the account each beneficiary should receive
  • For an IRA: primary and contingent beneficiaries, since an IRA passes by beneficiary designation and cannot be retitled into a trust
4
Sign the updated account record. Under NCUA's share insurance rules (12 CFR 745.4), a POD designation only expands insurance coverage where the beneficiary is a natural person, a charity, or another non-profit — so naming a business as a POD beneficiary does not buy extra coverage.
5
Married members: Washington is a community property state (RCW 26.16.030). Funds a member earned during the marriage are presumed community property and the surviving spouse already owns half, regardless of who is named as the POD beneficiary. Naming someone other than the spouse on a community-property account is worth raising with an attorney before signing.

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • Numerica publishes no downloadable POD or beneficiary designation form — the designation is set on the account record through Numerica.
  • Titling an account in a trust instead requires the signed Numerica Certificate of Trust (https://www-files.numericacu.com/production/documents/mrm/Trust-Certification-Document.pdf).
  • NCUA share insurance rules (12 CFR 745.4) limit which POD beneficiaries expand coverage: natural persons, charities, and other non-profits.
  • Washington community property (RCW 26.16.030) can override the practical effect of a POD naming for a married member.
