There are two ways to keep your MSUFCU accounts out of probate: adding Payable on Death designations and retitling accounts into a trust. Because MSUFCU is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Both methods ensure your accounts transfer directly to the people you choose, without court involvement.

Across 12 product types, MSUFCU accounts vary in how they transfer at death. The sections below walk through Payable on Death (POD) designations, trust funding options, and which products support each method.

Visit any MSUFCU branch location
2
Bring government-issued photo ID
3
Request the Beneficiary Designation Form (POD designation)
4
Provide beneficiary information:
  • Full name, date of birth, and Social Security number
  • Relationship to account holder
  • Percentage allocation
  • Primary and contingent beneficiary designations
5
Sign and submit the completed form

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • POD designation available for deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, money market) -- excludes IRAs
  • IRA accounts use a separate beneficiary designation process
  • If more than one POD beneficiary is named, ownership passes to all surviving beneficiaries without rights of survivorship
  • Trusts can be named as POD beneficiaries on deposit accounts
  • A trust can be named as beneficiary of an IRA (consult a tax advisor for implications)
  • DocuSign electronic completion available upon request
  • Beneficiary designations can also be submitted via eMessage through online banking
