There are two ways to keep your Mountain Heritage FCU accounts out of probate: adding Payable on Death designations and retitling accounts into a trust. Because Mountain Heritage FCU is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Both methods ensure your accounts transfer directly to the people you choose, without court involvement.

Mountain Heritage FCU has 9 accounts with different estate transfer rules. Here is how beneficiary designations, trust ownership, and probate apply to each one.

1
Visit a Mountain Heritage FCU branch with government-issued photo ID. The Parkersburg main office (1822 Seventh Street) keeps the fullest hours; the Kearneysville branch is open Monday and Friday only, 11:00am-4:30pm
2
Ask to add or update a POD (Payable on Death) beneficiary on your share, checking, club, money market, and certificate accounts, and to designate a beneficiary on any IRA — the IRA designation is a separate form from the POD designation
3
Bring, for each beneficiary:
  • Full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship
  • The share you want each to receive, if you are naming more than one
4
Sign the updated account documentation and keep your copy — the credit union publishes no online record of designations, so the signed card at the branch is the record

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • The credit union publishes no beneficiary form online and offers no online designation tool; designations are made on paper in branch or by mail
  • IRA beneficiary designations are separate from POD designations on deposit accounts — completing one does nothing for the other
  • Naming a trust as beneficiary generally calls for a Certification of Trust; confirm what the credit union needs before the appointment
