The Member Contact Center (Death Claims) at Keesler Federal coordinates account transitions after a member's death. How each account is handled depends on its setup: POD and trust accounts transfer automatically, while solely-owned accounts typically require court authorization through Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.

Claims can be filed by phone (1-888-533-7537) or by emailing documentation to mbrservices@kfcu.org. Before reaching out, gather the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate.

Death claim process

The death claim process at Keesler Federal works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Keesler Federal Member Contact Center at 888-533-7537 or visit any branch to report the death
2
Gather required documents based on account type
3
Submit documentation for the applicable account type:
  • For POD accounts: beneficiary provides certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID to claim funds
  • For joint accounts with right of survivorship: surviving owner provides certified death certificate to remove deceased from account
  • For non-POD/non-joint accounts: executor or administrator provides estate documents (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration)
  • For IRA/Keogh accounts: designated beneficiary provides certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID; distribution options depend on beneficiary type and relationship
4
Surviving family members should update their own beneficiary designations

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate
  • Government-issued photo ID for claimant
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD/joint account)
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if estate qualifies under Mississippi or Louisiana law)
  • Trust documents (if trust is named as beneficiary)
  • Marriage certificate or proof of relationship (may be required)

For accounts that originated as Jefferson Financial Federal Credit Union accounts (merger effective July 2025, full system integration completed March 2, 2026), all Keesler Federal processes now apply uniformly. Contact Member Services at 888-533-7537 for any questions.

Processing timelines at Keesler Federal: POD and joint accounts processed upon verification of documents; estate accounts vary based on probate requirements. Incomplete documentation is the most common cause of delays—submitting all required documents with the initial claim helps avoid additional processing time.

Keesler Federal requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for claimant, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD/joint account), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Funds in POD accounts are payable to the designated beneficiaries upon presentation of a certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID. If multiple POD beneficiaries are designated, funds are divided according to the percentage allocations on file. Beneficiaries should contact Keesler Federal at 888-533-7537 or visit any branch to initiate the claim.

IRA distributions at Keesler Federal can be requested by signed fax (228-385-5535), through the member services message board via online banking, or by visiting a Financial Services Representative at any branch. When requesting by fax or message board, the beneficiary must specify the amount to withdraw, whether federal taxes should be withheld (must be 10% or greater for Traditional IRA distributions), and how funds should be received (deposit to savings, checking, HIMMA, or mail check). A certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID are required. POD designations do not apply to IRA accounts; only the designated IRA beneficiary may claim the funds.

Keesler Federal's Member Contact Center (Death Claims) can be reached by phone at 1-888-533-7537, email at mbrservices@kfcu.org, and fax at 228-385-5535 for questions throughout the claims process.

Multiple Keesler Federal accounts may mean multiple claims. Some account types can be processed together, but others require their own documentation. Check with the Member Contact Center (Death Claims) to confirm what applies.
