GreenState CU offers 11 accounts, each with its own rules for what happens when a member dies. As a membership-based credit union, GreenState CU membership open to anyone who lives or works anywhere in Iowa, or in bordering counties in Illinois (Boone, Carroll, DuPage, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Jo Daviess, Kane, Knox, McHenry, Mercer, Ogle, Rock Island, Stephenson, Warren, Whiteside, Will County north of I-80, Winnebago), Nebraska (Dakota, Thurston, Burt, Washington, Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Otoe), South Dakota (Union, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody, Brookings), and Wisconsin counties bordering Iowa. University of Iowa students, alumni, and staff are also eligible, as are Iowa Consumer Council/American Consumer Council members and direct family of current members. Access to 30,000+ ATMs via CO-OP Network. Some transfer automatically to a named beneficiary, others can be held in a trust, and a few may require probate if no plan is in place.

GreenState CU handles beneficiary designations in branch, by mail, and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

There are two sides to estate planning at GreenState CU: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

Frequently asked questions

GreenState offers two levels of trust support: (1) standard trust-titled deposit accounts where you provide trust documentation and accounts are titled in the trust name, and (2) GreenState Trust Services (powered by Members Trust Company), which provides full-service trust administration, estate planning, and investment management. Members Trust Company is a federal thrift regulated by the OCC. Trust and investment products through Members Trust Company are not NCUA-insured and may lose value.

Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Iowa, or in bordering counties in Illinois, Nebraska, South Dakota, or Wisconsin. University of Iowa students, alumni, and staff are also eligible. Direct family members of current GreenState members qualify, as do members of the Iowa Consumer Council or American Consumer Council. A $5 minimum deposit in a Share Savings account establishes membership.

GrowGreen Checking earns up to 4.00% APY on balances up to $19,999 when you meet monthly requirements including 15+ debit/credit card purchases of $15+, a $500+ ACH deposit or withdrawal, and a $1,000 minimum average daily balance. A lower tier of up to 3.00% APY is available with debit card activity alone. RewardsPlus Checking also earns a premium yield on balances up to $19,999 but requires 15+ GreenState credit card purchases of $10+ per month and a $250+ ACH deposit or withdrawal, and offers cashback points on credit card purchases. Both accounts have no monthly service fees.

Visit any GreenState branch or call (800) 397-3790. Bring a copy of the trust document (pages showing trust name, establishing signatures, and trustee designations) or a Certificate of Trust, the SSN or EIN for the trust, and government-issued ID for each trustee. GreenState does not act as trustee and does not monitor or enforce the terms of the trust. Trust accounts are available for savings, checking, money market, and certificate account types.
