How your Great Plains FCU accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, Great Plains FCU headquartered at 2306 S. Range Line Rd., Joplin, MO 64804. Originally chartered in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1950 as Spencer Chemical Employees Federal Credit Union; headquarters moved to Joplin, Missouri in December 1996. Two Missouri branches (Joplin home office and Carthage) plus eight Kansas branches (Abilene, Columbus, Hillsboro, Independence, McPherson, Montezuma, Salina, and Wichita). Membership open to individuals who reside, are employed, worship, or attend school in cities or counties where branches are located. Also open to employees of Select Employer Groups (SEGs) and immediate family members (spouse, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, or sibling, including step and adoptive relationships) of current members. With 21 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

Beneficiary changes at Great Plains FCU can be made in branch, by mail, and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

Great Plains FCU has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Yes. Great Plains FCU accepts trust-titled accounts for checking, savings, money market, and certificate products. Bring your trust agreement or Certificate of Trust, government-issued photo ID for all trustees, and the trust's tax ID (EIN for irrevocable trusts; the grantor's SSN for a revocable living trust). At least one trustee must meet GPFCU membership eligibility requirements (residence, employment, worship, or school in a city/county where GPFCU has a branch in Kansas or Missouri, an SEG, or immediate family of a current member). IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust but can name a trust as beneficiary.

No. Great Plains FCU is a member-owned credit union; it holds deposit accounts in the name of a trust but does not act as trustee, provide trust administration, or offer investment management.
