What to do when a Dime account holder dies

Contact Dime's Estate Services — 3-step process, 5 required documents, and contact dime community bank for case-specific processing timelines.

Brand change

Dime Community Bank rebranded as Dime Commercial Bank following shareholder approval at the May 28, 2026 annual meeting; the parent renamed from Dime Community Bancshares, Inc. to Dime Commercial Bancshares, Inc. The stock listing moved to the NYSE (ticker DCOM) on or around April 7, 2026. This is a name change of the same New York State-chartered bank — account numbers, the routing number (021406667), branch network, and existing deposit and estate relationships are unaffected. Heirs settling an account opened under the "Dime Community Bank" name should reach the same institution at dime.com and 1-800-321-3463. Effective May 2026.

The procedures below reflect Dime's accounts. Account servicing may transfer as the change takes effect.

What happens to Dime accounts after the account holder dies depends on how each account was titled. Beneficiary-designated and trust-owned accounts transfer directly. Accounts in the deceased's name alone go through the estate, and the executor or administrator works with Dime's Estate Services (1-800-321-3463) to claim the funds.

To start a claim, contact Dime by phone at 1-800-321-3463 or email documentation to support@dime.com. You will need the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate.

Death claim process

The death claim process at Dime works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Contact Dime Community Bank at 1-800-321-3463 (Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM ET; Saturday 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM ET) or visit any branch to initiate the death claim process.
2
Provide documentation based on account type:
  • POD accounts: the named beneficiary presents a certified death certificate and valid government-issued photo ID at any branch
  • Joint accounts: the surviving account holder presents a certified death certificate to remove the deceased from the account
  • Accounts without a beneficiary designation: letters testamentary, letters of administration, or a New York small estate affidavit may be required
  • Trust accounts: the successor trustee presents the death certificate, updated trust documentation evidencing successor trustee authority, and valid ID
  • IRA accounts: the named beneficiary presents the death certificate, valid ID, and completes applicable IRA distribution or inherited IRA forms
3
Complete any required account closure, transfer, or distribution forms as directed by the branch.

Required Documents

  • Death certificate (certified copy)
  • Valid government-issued photo ID for each beneficiary or claimant
  • For accounts without a beneficiary: letters testamentary, letters of administration, or New York small estate affidavit
  • For trust accounts: trust document pages evidencing successor trustee authority
  • For IRA accounts: IRA Beneficiary Designation form and inherited IRA application as applicable

What to know at this institution

Per the Dime Consumer Terms and Conditions "DEATH OR INCOMPETENCE" clause, account owners agree to notify the bank promptly when any person with a right to withdraw dies or is adjudicated incompetent. The bank may continue to honor the deceased's checks, items, and instructions until it (a) knows of the death or adjudication and (b) has had a reasonable opportunity to act on that knowledge, and it may pay or certify checks drawn on or before the date of death for up to ten (10) days after death unless someone claiming an interest in the account orders a stop payment. Under the "FIDUCIARY ACCOUNTS" clause, accounts held by a trustee under a written trust agreement, or by an executor, administrator, or conservator under court order, are recognized but the bank does not act as trustee and does not monitor or enforce the trust or letters. On a joint-with-survivorship account, the bank may treat the account as the surviving owner's sole property and honor their withdrawals after the death of the other owner. POD accounts transfer directly to the named beneficiary outside of probate upon presentation of a certified death certificate and valid ID.
