How your CU1 accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, CU1 operates 12 branch locations across Alaska, headquartered at 1941 Abbott Road, Anchorage, AK 99507. Membership begins with a $5 deposit into a Regular Share savings account. Routing number: 325272063. Branch hours: Monday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm (hours may vary by location). With 15 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

Beneficiary designations at CU1 can be managed in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes in branch; longer by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

CU1 has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Credit Union 1 accepts both revocable and irrevocable trust accounts for checking, savings, and certificate accounts. Visit a local branch with your Certification of Trust (or full trust agreement), trustee identification, and the trust Tax Identification Number. Existing accounts can also be retitled to a trust without closing them. Membership requires maintaining a minimum $5 balance in a Regular Share savings account.

Yes. Existing share (deposit) accounts including checking, savings, and certificate accounts can be retitled to your revocable living trust. Visit a Credit Union 1 branch with your Certification of Trust and trustee identification. The process does not require closing and reopening the account if the same SSN or EIN is used. IRA accounts cannot be retitled to a trust.

Membership at Credit Union 1 begins with a $5 deposit into a Regular Share savings account. This $5 deposit maintains your co-ownership of the credit union. You can open an account online or by visiting any CU1 branch in Alaska. Credit Union 1 has 12 branch locations across the state.

Yes. A trust can be named as a primary or contingent beneficiary on Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, and SIMPLE IRA accounts at Credit Union 1. Visit a CU1 branch or call (907) 339-9485 to complete an IRA Beneficiary Designation form. You may need to provide a copy of your Certification of Trust. IRAs cannot be retitled to a trust.

Yes. Certificate accounts (share certificates) at Credit Union 1 can be opened in the name of a revocable or irrevocable trust. Terms range from 3 months to 60 months with higher rates for balances over $40,000 and $100,000. Visit a CU1 branch with your Certification of Trust and trustee identification to open a trust certificate account.

Credit Union 1 and MAC Federal Credit Union (Fairbanks) announced a planned merger in early 2026, with a special member vote scheduled for May 28, 2026. If approved, the combined credit union continues under the Credit Union 1 name with approximately 112,000 members and 19 branch locations. CU1 has stated there will be no immediate changes to accounts or services on approval; account numbers, beneficiary designations, POD designations, and trust account titles already in place at CU1 are expected to carry over. As with any system integration, confirm beneficiary and trust paperwork is on file after the transition is complete.
