The Estate Representative / Account Settlement at CommunityAmerica coordinates account transitions after a member's death. How each account is handled depends on its setup: POD and trust accounts transfer automatically, while solely-owned accounts typically require court authorization through Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.

To start, call CommunityAmerica at (800) 892-7957. Have the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate ready before you call.

Death claim process

The death claim process at CommunityAmerica works as follows:

Filing a claim

1
Contact CommunityAmerica to report the member's death:
  • Call 800.892.7957
  • Visit any branch location
2
Provide initial information:
  • Decedent's full name
  • Date of death
  • Address at time of death
  • Name and contact information of the person reporting the death
3
CommunityAmerica gathers information and forwards it to an Estate Representative
4
The Estate Representative conducts an account review:
  • Reviews account types, ownership structure, and applicable beneficiary designations
  • An administrative freeze may be placed on accounts to protect assets during the review
  • Government benefit payments deposited in the month of death or after may be returned as required by federal regulation
5
The Estate Representative contacts the informant once the review is complete (may take several days)
6
Distribution depends on account type:
  • Joint accounts: the surviving joint owner retains the account with right of survivorship
  • POD accounts: named beneficiaries receive funds upon providing a certified death certificate and government-issued ID
  • Accounts without beneficiaries: executor or administrator provides Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court
7
For a small estate, a state small-estate affidavit may substitute for probate and Letters:
  • Kansas: estates whose probate assets do not exceed $75,000 qualify for a small-estate affidavit (K.S.A. 59-1507b)
  • Missouri: estates valued at $40,000 or less (net of liens and encumbrances) qualify for a small-estate affidavit (RSMo 473.097)
  • Provide the notarized affidavit and a certified death certificate to the Estate Representative
8
Submit all required documents to the Estate Representative
9
CommunityAmerica processes the distribution after document review

Required Documents

  • Certified death certificate (required before any account can be settled)
  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport) for the claimant or beneficiary
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD designation and probate is required)
  • Trust documents and trustee identification (if trust is named beneficiary)
  • Small-estate affidavit (Kansas: probate assets up to $75,000 per K.S.A. 59-1507b; Missouri: $40,000 or less net of liens per RSMo 473.097)
  • Probate documentation (if applicable)

What to know at this institution

CommunityAmerica will not settle any account until an official death certificate is provided (per its account-settlement page, communityamerica.com/more/account-settlement). Reporting the death routes to an Estate Representative who reviews account type, ownership, and beneficiary designations and may place an administrative freeze; government benefit payments deposited in the month of death or after may be returned as required by federal regulation. In Kansas, a small-estate affidavit is available for probate assets up to $75,000 (K.S.A. 59-1507b, threshold raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023); in Missouri, for estates of $40,000 or less net of liens (RSMo 473.097). For mortgage loan inquiries related to a deceased member, contact TruHome Mortgage Servicing at 913.214.3345. For loan repayment alternatives or account resolution matters, request an Account Resolution Counselor. For investment and wealth management accounts, contact CommunityAmerica Wealth Management (Copper Financial) separately at 800.892.7957.

How long the process takes at CommunityAmerica: The Estate Representative review may take several days. POD accounts with named beneficiaries are processed more quickly than accounts requiring probate. Timeline for probate-dependent accounts varies by court jurisdiction. The most common reason for delays is missing or incomplete documentation, so submitting everything upfront is the best way to keep things moving.

CommunityAmerica requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified death certificate (required before any account can be settled), Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport) for the claimant or beneficiary, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration (if no POD designation and probate is required), and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.

Frequently asked questions

Visit any CommunityAmerica branch or call 800.892.7957 to request a POD beneficiary designation on your checking, savings, money market, or certificate account. Provide each beneficiary's full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship. Specify the percentage allocation for each beneficiary (must total 100%). All account owners must sign the designation form. On the death of the last surviving owner, POD funds pass directly to the named beneficiaries and bypass probate.

Contact CommunityAmerica at 800.892.7957 or visit a branch to report the death. A team member gathers initial information and forwards it to an Estate Representative, who reviews account types, ownership, and beneficiary designations; an administrative freeze may be placed to protect assets. Joint accounts pass to the surviving owner. POD accounts are distributed to named beneficiaries upon providing a certified death certificate and government-issued ID. Accounts without beneficiaries or joint owners require Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, unless the estate qualifies for a small-estate affidavit (Kansas: probate assets up to $75,000 under K.S.A. 59-1507b; Missouri: $40,000 or less net of liens under RSMo 473.097). CommunityAmerica will not settle any account until an official death certificate is provided.

CommunityAmerica's Estate Representative / Account Settlement can be reached by phone at (800) 892-7957 for questions throughout the claims process.

Multiple CommunityAmerica accounts may mean multiple claims. Some account types can be processed together, but others require their own documentation. Check with the Estate Representative / Account Settlement to confirm what applies.
