Preparing your Citadel accounts for estate transfer involves two key steps: designating beneficiaries on each account and, where appropriate, retitling accounts into a trust. Because Citadel is a membership-based institution, trust retitling must maintain the membership eligibility requirement. Accounts with Payable on Death designations or trust ownership bypass probate entirely.

The transfer rules at Citadel vary across 9 accounts. Below is a breakdown of beneficiary options, trust funding, and which products support each method.

Visit any Citadel branch location
2
Request to add or update a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary on your deposit accounts
3
Provide beneficiary details:
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Relationship to account owner
4
All account owners must authorize the beneficiary designation
5
Citadel requires all Trust Accounts to name a beneficiary
6
Receive confirmation of the updated POD designation

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • POD beneficiary designations are available for checking, savings, money market, and certificate accounts
  • All Trust Accounts are required to name a beneficiary per Citadel policy
  • The Settlor of a Revocable Trust may change the beneficiary at any time
  • The individual establishing a Revocable Trust (the Settlor) must be a member of the credit union
  • IRA beneficiary designations are administered by Ascensus; Citadel initiates the paperwork
  • If no IRA beneficiaries are named, funds go to the decedent's estate
