What to do when a Aspiration account holder dies

Contact Aspiration — 6-step process, 5 required documents, and varies; contact greenfi support for estimated processing times after document submission

Brand change

Aspiration rebranded to GreenFi on April 22, 2025. Existing Aspiration Spend & Save accounts converted automatically to GreenFi checking and savings; no member action was required. The GreenFi brand was acquired by Coastal Financial Corporation in January 2026; banking services are provided by Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC. Estate and deceased-account inquiries are handled through GreenFi customer support (1-800-683-8529 / support@greenfi.com), not the former Aspiration channels. Effective April 2025.

The procedures below reflect Aspiration's accounts. Account servicing may transfer as the change takes effect.

After a Aspiration account holder dies, accounts with beneficiary designations or trust ownership transfer to the designated recipients without probate. Solely-owned accounts require the estate's representative to contact Aspiration's GreenFi Customer Support (Death Claims) at 1-800-683-8529 with the proper legal authority documents.

The claim process can be initiated by phone at 1-800-683-8529 or by sending documentation to support@greenfi.com. Have the account holder's full name, account numbers, and a certified death certificate available when making initial contact.

Death claim process

Follow these steps to file a death claim with Aspiration:

Filing a claim

1
Contact GreenFi customer support at 1-800-683-8529 or email support@greenfi.com to report the account holder's death
2
Provide the deceased account holder's name, email address, and phone number associated with the account
3
Submit required documentation:
  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Unexpired government-issued photo ID of the executor or authorized representative
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from the probate court
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if applicable under state law)
4
GreenFi and Coastal Community Bank will review the submitted documentation
5
Account disposition depends on account type:
  • Spend & Save accounts (no beneficiary): funds distributed to the estate per probate court order
  • Redwood Fund/IRA accounts with named beneficiary: assets transfer to the beneficiary upon verification
  • Redwood IRA accounts: subject to IRS distribution rules for inherited IRAs
6
Allow additional processing time as GreenFi may coordinate with Coastal Community Bank for deposit accounts

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Unexpired government-issued photo ID of the executor or authorized representative
  • Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration
  • Small Estate Affidavit (if applicable under state law)
  • Affidavit of Domicile (if requested)

What to know at this institution

GreenFi does not have a dedicated estate services department or published death claim procedures. All death notifications are handled through general customer support. Because deposit accounts do not support POD designations, they will require probate proceedings for transfer. Banking services are provided by Coastal Community Bank, so the death claim process may involve coordination between GreenFi and the bank.

Expected timelines at Aspiration: Varies; contact GreenFi support for estimated processing times after document submission. Delays are almost always caused by incomplete paperwork—gathering all required documents before filing the initial claim helps avoid back-and-forth.

Documentation required by Aspiration includes Certified copy of the death certificate, Unexpired government-issued photo ID of the executor or authorized representative, and Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, along with additional paperwork that varies by account type. All death certificates and court documents must be certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

GreenFi deposit accounts (Spend & Save) do not support POD beneficiary designations, trust account registration, or retitling to a trust. This means deposit account balances will pass through probate after the account holder dies. For estate planning purposes, consider keeping only operating funds in GreenFi and maintaining larger balances at an institution that supports POD designations or trust accounts.

Yes. The Redwood Fund supports a Transfer on Death (TOD) beneficiary designation, and the Redwood IRA supports an IRA beneficiary designation. Forms are available at greenfi.com/policies. Submit the completed form per the instructions on the form. Deposit accounts (Spend & Save) do not support beneficiary designations.

Contact GreenFi customer support at 1-800-683-8529 or support@greenfi.com to report the death. Spend & Save deposit accounts do not have beneficiary designations, so funds will pass to the estate and require probate court documentation (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration) before distribution. Redwood Fund accounts with a TOD beneficiary on file transfer directly to the named beneficiary. Redwood IRA accounts pay out to the named IRA beneficiary subject to IRS inherited-IRA rules. A certified death certificate and government-issued photo ID for the executor or beneficiary are required.

Aspiration's GreenFi Customer Support (Death Claims) can be reached by phone at 1-800-683-8529 and email at support@greenfi.com for questions throughout the claims process.

Multiple Aspiration accounts may mean multiple claims. Some account types can be processed together, but others require their own documentation. Check with the GreenFi Customer Support (Death Claims) to confirm what applies.
