There are two ways to keep your Ally Bank accounts out of probate: adding beneficiary designations and retitling eligible accounts into a revocable living trust. Which approach works best depends on the account type and your overall estate plan.

With 13 product types, Ally Bank offers a range of transfer options. Some accounts support Payable on Death (POD) designations, others can be retitled into a trust, and some require probate if no beneficiary is designated. The sections below break down each step.

Go to Profile and Settings, then select Beneficiaries

Add a beneficiary to a deposit account:
  • Click Add Beneficiary and select the account
  • Enter beneficiary information and submit

Add a beneficiary to an IRA account:
  • Select your plan from the account list, then choose Beneficiaries
  • Designate a primary beneficiary first, then add contingent beneficiaries if desired

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • Married residents of community property states need a notarized Change of Beneficiary form with spouse signature to name non-spouse IRA beneficiaries
  • Trusts, minors, and charities as beneficiaries require calling customer care at 1-877-247-2559
  • Bank deposit accounts have no primary or contingent designations; beneficiaries share equally
  • IRA accounts limited to 6 total beneficiaries (primary and contingent combined)
