How your Ally Bank accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is titled and whether a beneficiary is on file. Of those, 13 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. Getting these details right keeps assets out of probate and ensures they reach the intended recipients.

Beneficiary designations at Ally Bank can be managed online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 10-20 minutes. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

Ally Bank has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. POD beneficiaries receive separate FDIC insurance coverage (up to $250,000 per beneficiary). Trust accounts are also FDIC insured up to the maximum allowed by law, based on the number of qualifying beneficiaries.

Married residents of community property states who wish to name someone other than their spouse as an IRA beneficiary must submit a notarized Change of Beneficiary form that includes the spouse's signature.

Non-IRA personal accounts at Ally Bank can be converted to revocable trust accounts using the Trust Conversion Request form, provided the same Social Security number is retained. Submit the completed form along with your Certification of Trust or required trust agreement pages. IRA accounts are not eligible for trust titling.

Ally Invest brokerage account beneficiary designations require completing a PDF beneficiary form. Download the Non-IRA Beneficiary Election form from ally.com, complete it with your beneficiary details and allocation percentages, then submit via secure upload at secure.ally.com, fax to 1-866-699-0563, or mail to Ally Invest, PO Box 30248, Charlotte, NC 28230.

Ally Bank accepts both revocable and irrevocable trusts for deposit accounts (savings, checking, CDs, and money market). Business or corporate trusts are not eligible. Only one owner is allowed per trust account, but multiple trustees are permitted if named in the trust documentation. IRA accounts cannot be held in a trust.
