Retirement retirement accounts at Alight transfer by beneficiary designation, not through probate. With 7 account types, each carrying different tax implications for heirs, getting these designations right is one of the most consequential estate planning decisions.
Beneficiary designations at Alight can be managed online, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 10-15 minutes in the employer portal; longer if a notarized spousal consent is required. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to name a trust as the beneficiary of retirement accounts.
There are two sides to estate planning at Alight: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

On an ERISA-covered plan such as a 401(k) or a pension, the surviving spouse of a married participant is the beneficiary by law unless the spouse signed a written consent — notarized or witnessed by a plan representative — to a different beneficiary. A designation naming a child, a sibling, or a trust without that consent generally does not displace the spouse. Alight applies the employer's plan document, so ask the employer's service center for the beneficiary of record and whether a valid spousal consent is on file. A will cannot change a plan beneficiary.
Because the plan, not Alight, sets the rules. Alight is the recordkeeper; the employer is the plan sponsor and plan administrator, and the plan document decides what the beneficiary designation looks like, whether a trust may be named, and whether a signed paper form is required. You make the designation inside your employer's Alight-hosted benefits portal, reached through alight.com/find-your-hr-website. The forms published at alightfinancialsolutions.com — including the IRA Designation of Beneficiary — apply to Alight IRA and self-directed brokerage accounts, not to your employer plan account.
