What happens to Alight retirement accounts after the account holder dies depends on how each account was titled. Beneficiary-designated and trust-owned accounts transfer directly. Accounts in the deceased's name alone go through the estate, and the executor or administrator works with Alight's Employer-Specific Service Center / Alight Financial Solutions (1-800-890-3200) to claim the funds.
Death claims at Alight can be started through an online portal, which streamlines the initial notification and document upload. Phone and mail options are also available.
The death claim process at Alight works as follows:
Contact information is employer-specific. Visit alight.com/find-your-hr-website to locate your plan's dedicated service center phone number. The corporate number (224-737-7000) is for general inquiries, not participant services. Alight supports digital bereavement documentation upload. For retiree health benefits, the death should also be reported to Alight Retiree Health Solutions at [retiree.alight.com/losing-loved-one](https://retiree.alight.com/losing-loved-one). There is a six-month deadline for submitting retiree health claims after the participant's death; claims must be submitted by mail within the year.
Expected timelines at Alight: Claims packet mailed within 1-2 business days of notification; distribution processing time varies by employer plan. Delays are almost always caused by incomplete paperwork—gathering all required documents before filing the initial claim helps avoid back-and-forth.
Alight requires several documents to process a claim, including Certified copy of death certificate, Government-issued photo ID for beneficiary, and Completed Beneficiary Distribution Request form, and additional documentation depending on the account type. Certified copies are typically needed—photocopies are generally not accepted for death certificates or court documents.
Alight Worklife is Alight's integrated digital platform that brings together retirement, health, and benefits administration. Participants access their accounts, manage beneficiaries, and file claims through this platform via their employer-specific portal. It is powered by Alight LumenAI for personalized recommendations and integrates with over 600 HR and benefits tools.
Alight Financial Solutions provides estate-related forms at alightfinancialsolutions.com/forms_download.htm, including the Designation of Beneficiary Form, Beneficiary Distribution Request, Affidavit of Domicile, Inherited Account Adoption Agreement (Traditional and Roth), Transfer on Death Agreement (Individual and Joint), Power of Attorney Affidavit, IRA Distribution Form, and Account Transfer Request Form. Employer plan-specific forms may differ from these AFS forms.
Contact the deceased participant's employer-specific Alight service center, which can be found at alight.com/find-your-hr-website. Report the death and Alight will mail a claims packet to beneficiaries within 1-2 business days. Beneficiaries must submit a certified death certificate, government-issued ID, and the completed Beneficiary Distribution Request form. Documents can be uploaded through the digital portal or mailed. For retiree health benefits, also notify Alight Retiree Health Solutions at retiree.alight.com/losing-loved-one. Survivors have six months to submit retiree health claims by mail, with a one-year maximum deadline.
Alight's Employer-Specific Service Center / Alight Financial Solutions can be reached by phone at 1-800-890-3200 and fax at 1-847-554-1444 for questions throughout the claims process.
When the deceased had multiple Alight retirement accounts, some may need separate claims while others can be handled together. The Employer-Specific Service Center / Alight Financial Solutions can clarify what's needed for each account type.
