YouTube defers to Google's account-level deceased user process. Google considers requests from immediate family members and legal representatives to: (a) close the account, (b) obtain data from the account, or (c) request funds from the account. Google states its primary responsibility is to keep people's information secure, safe, and private, and that decisions are made only after careful review. Google explicitly notes: "We cannot provide passwords or other login details." Critically, if the account is closed, "Google is unable to process any request to turn over the contents of the account at a later date," so closure is irreversible for data recovery. There is no memorial mode for YouTube channels. However, AdSense revenue continues paying automatically to the linked bank account after death (the system does not know the owner is deceased), and a rightful heir can claim unpaid earnings with appropriate legal documentation. Google's Inactive Account Manager allows pre-death designation of up to 10 trusted contacts to receive specified data (including YouTube data) after a configurable inactivity timeout -- effectively a beneficiary-designation feature for digital assets.

How to request a transfer

Here is the process for transferring YouTube accounts after the account holder dies:

1
Submit a request through Google's deceased user form. Three request types are available:
  • •Close the account: requires your government ID and the death certificate. Important: if you close the account, Google is unable to process any request to turn over the contents at a later date.
  • •Submit a request for funds (AdSense/Google Wallet): typically requires court-certified letters testamentary or equivalent, plus your government ID and the death certificate.
  • •Obtain data from the account: requires your government ID, the death certificate, and additional documentation; may require a US court order. Documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified and notarized professional translation.
2
For AdSense revenue: AdSense continues paying automatically to the linked bank account because the system does not know the owner is deceased. If the linked bank account is still open, payments continue on the normal monthly schedule.
3
To claim unpaid AdSense earnings as a rightful heir per the AdSense rightful heir process: upload appropriate legal documentation through the linked Google portal, or mail or fax to Google, Inc., Attn: Google Legal Support, AdSense Support, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043; fax (650) 618-8507 (Attn: Google AdSense Support).
4
Per AdSense payments name and address support, payment name and address can be updated "to fix misspellings, or to make adjustments for changes such as marriage, death, or company mergers" -- this allows redirecting future payments without transferring the account itself.
5
For Brand Account channels: if the deceased added other owners before death per the Brand Account ownership guide, those owners retain full access. No estate process is needed. Check the channel's Brand Account ownership settings in the Brand Accounts section of the surviving owner's Google Account.
6
Use caution before closing the Google account if the YouTube channel has ongoing ad revenue. Closing the account permanently deletes all YouTube content and stops all revenue. Once closed, Google states it is unable to turn over the contents at a later date. Where ongoing monetization exists, consider claiming unpaid funds and keeping the account active rather than closing it.
7
Be aware of the 6-month monetization risk: per YouTube's monetization FAQs, "YouTube does reserve the right, at its discretion, to remove monetization from channels if a channel is inactive and not uploading or making posts for 6 months or more."
8
Be aware of the 2-year inactivity deletion under Google's inactive account policy: Google reserves the right to delete an account inactive across Google for at least 2 years. However, Google's own announcement of the policy states: "we do not have plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos at this time" -- accounts with uploaded YouTube videos are currently exempt. Google sends multiple notifications before any deletion to both the account email and recovery email.
9
If the AdSense account becomes inactive for an extended period, Google may eventually send the unpaid balance to the relevant state government through escheatment (unclaimed property). Escheatment timelines vary by state, typically 2-5 years.

Required Documents

  • Government-issued ID of the requestor
  • Death certificate of the account holder
  • Court-certified letters testamentary (for fund requests)
  • US court order (may be required for data access)
  • If documents are not in English: certified and notarized professional translation

Frequently asked questions

YouTube defers to Google's deceased user process. Family or estate representatives can request to close the account (deleting all content), obtain data, or request funds. Google does not grant login access. If the channel is on a Brand Account with other owners, those owners retain full access. There is no memorial mode for YouTube channels.

Yes. AdSense continues paying automatically to the linked bank account. The system does not detect the account owner's death. Payments continue on the normal monthly schedule as long as the bank account is open and the channel generates revenue. A rightful heir can also claim unpaid earnings by submitting legal documentation to Google.

Not through Google's standard process. Google accounts are non-transferable. However, if the channel is on a Brand Account and the creator added another person as an owner before death, that person retains full access -- effectively inheriting the channel. YouTube's newer channel permissions system allows delegating managerial access but does not allow changing the channel owner, so Brand Account ownership remains the only mechanism for channel succession.

Yes. A rightful heir can claim unpaid AdSense earnings by submitting legal documentation (death certificate, letters testamentary) to Google Legal Support at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, or by fax at (650) 618-8507. The AdSense payment name and address can also be updated for "death" to redirect future payments to the estate.

If the AdSense account becomes inactive for an extended period (typically 2-5 years depending on the state), Google may send the account balance to the state government through escheatment -- the process of turning over unclaimed property to the state for safekeeping. The rightful heir can then claim the funds from the state.

Use caution. Closing the Google account permanently deletes all YouTube content (videos, playlists, comments) and stops all revenue. Google states that once an account is closed, it is unable to process any request to turn over the contents at a later date. If the channel generates ongoing ad revenue, it may be better to claim unpaid funds and keep the account active rather than closing it.

Requirements vary by request type. Account closure requires your government-issued ID and the death certificate. Fund requests additionally require court-certified letters testamentary. Data access may require a US court order. All documents not in English must include certified and notarized professional translations.

Once transferred, accounts are subject to the program's standard terms. Having the deceased account holder's details documented in advance makes the transfer process significantly easier for the family.
