Because Vercel Inc. reviews transfer requests on a case-by-case basis, there is no guarantee that accounts will be transferred after death. Lifetime planning reduces dependence on that outcome.

How to protect your Vercel accounts

8 lifetime planning steps for your Vercel accounts:

Move important projects from a personal (Hobby) account to a team. Team projects can have multiple Owners and survive individual account changes; personal-account projects cannot be transferred to another user after death.

Add a trusted person as a team Owner. Vercel's documentation states: "Teams can have more than one owner. For continuity, we recommend that at least two individuals have owner permissions." Owners have full control over settings, members, billing, and all projects.

Note the Pro Trial constraint. Vercel's team ownership transfer guide warns: "If your team is currently on a Pro Trial plan, please be aware that there is a limit of one Owner per team." During a Pro Trial the original Owner must be demoted after the new Owner is added.

Keep source code in a Git repository (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket) with shared access. Vercel deployments can be recreated from Git, so the application survives even if the Vercel account does not.

Document environment variables, secrets, and integrations externally. Environment variables stored in Vercel are not included in Git and there is no bulk export mechanism. They are permanently lost on account deletion.

Decide whether custom domains stay on Vercel or move to an external registrar. Keeping them on a team with multiple Owners avoids a transfer step; moving them out simplifies the estate but requires an authorization code obtained while the original Owner has access. Per ICANN rules, a domain must be registered with its current registrar for 60 days before it can be transferred.

Use the Billing role to give an executor financial oversight without granting project changes. The Billing role manages payment methods and invoices and has read-only access to every project. On Pro teams the Billing role is limited to one member; on Enterprise teams it can be assigned to multiple members.

Configure deployment retention policies so old deployments are not retained indefinitely.

Family sharing

Personal Vercel accounts (Hobby plan) are non-transferable. However, Vercel teams support role-based access control (RBAC) with multiple team-level roles: Owner, Member, Developer, Security, Billing, Pro Viewer, Enterprise Viewer, and Contributor. Team ownership CAN be transferred by adding a new Owner and having the original Owner step down. This is the primary estate planning mechanism. Projects and custom domains can be transferred between teams. Vercel officially recommends maintaining at least two Owners per team for continuity. Note: Pro Trial teams are limited to one Owner at a time, so on Pro Trial the original Owner must demote themselves to Member after the new Owner is added.

Should you save your passwords for your family?

Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:

  • Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
  • It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
  • Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).

An inventory listing the Vercel account lets a fiduciary identify it and act on it through the operator's official channels.

Vercel does not support beneficiary designations. Unlike financial accounts, there is no way to name a beneficiary on this type of account.
