Estate planning as a Squarespace account holder

Squarespace is an all-in-one website platform offering site building, domain registration (including the former Google Domains portfolio Squarespace acquired in 2023 and finished migrating to Squarespace Domains in 2024), e-commerce, scheduling (Acuity), and email campaigns. A single Squarespace account can hold multiple websites, registered domains, online stores with order history and inventory, client scheduling data, email subscriber lists, and member areas.

Squarespace reviews transfer requests for Squarespace accounts on a case-by-case basis after the account holder's death. Approval is at the company's sole discretion, and documentation requirements must be met before any transfer is considered.

What happens at death

Squarespace has a dedicated support path for deceased account holders but does not grant administrative control. Per the deceased-account article, the family or representative receives Billing permissions only; Squarespace states it "can't provide you with administrative control of the site" or "the ability to edit the site's content." Billing users can cancel the subscription, change the billing plan, upgrade a trial to paid service, view and change billing information, and view invoices. They cannot add or edit content, make design changes, access analytics, add or delete pages, manage domains, invite contributors, or access most administrative settings. E-commerce orders, customer data, Acuity Scheduling client records, and email campaign subscriber lists all require higher permission levels that Squarespace does not grant through the deceased-account process. Squarespace 5 sites and legacy Acuity Scheduling accounts without a Squarespace login cannot receive billing access at all; only cancellation or removal is offered.
