Spotify is the world's largest music streaming platform with 600M+ users. A Spotify consumer account holds playlists, saved music, listening history, podcast subscriptions, purchased audiobooks, and potentially gift card balances. While streaming subscriptions have no transferable monetary value, purchased audiobooks and live event tickets represent real financial value that is lost upon account closure. Spotify accounts are non-transferable under the Terms of Use, and Spotify has no published bereavement policy for consumer accounts.
When a Spotify account holder dies, their accounts are forfeited. The program's terms state that accounts do not constitute property of the account holder and cannot be transferred upon death, by operation of law, or through estate planning documents.
What happens at death
Spotify has no published bereavement or deceased-user policy for consumer accounts. The Terms of Use state: "You may not assign these Terms, in whole or in part, nor transfer or sublicense your rights under these Terms to any third party." Upon account closure, Spotify opens a 7-day reactivation window; after 7 days the account cannot be reactivated and data deletion begins, including playlists, saved music, listening history, and podcast subscriptions. Purchased audiobooks and live event tickets for future events are forfeited on closure (explicitly stated in the Close Account help article). There is no documented transfer mechanism for playlists, purchases, or account data. Family plan members keep their individual accounts but lose Premium when the plan manager's account closes.
