Estate planning as a Riot Games account holder

A single Riot account is used across Riot Games titles, including League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runeterra, and Wild Rift. The estate-relevant assets are the account itself and what it holds: purchased champions, skins, agents, and other unlocked Virtual Content, plus virtual currency such as Riot Points (RP) and VALORANT Points (VP). Under Riot's Terms of Service, the account and all Virtual Content are licensed rather than owned, are personal and non-transferable, and have no real-world monetary value.

Under Riot Games's terms, account are not property of the account holder and are forfeited when the account closes at death. No estate planning document—will, trust, or otherwise—can override this forfeiture.

What happens at death

Riot's Terms of Service state that a player has "no ownership or other property interest in your account" and "no ownership or other property interest in any of the Virtual Content you unlock, regardless of how you acquired access to it." Virtual Content (skins, champions, agents, and similar unlocks) is granted as "a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicenseable, revocable, limited right and license," and Riot Points and other virtual currency have "no monetary value" and cannot be transferred or redeemed for real-world money. The Terms also prohibit account transfer outright: "You can't share your account or Login Credentials with anyone. You can't sell, transfer or allow any other person to access your account or Login Credentials." Because the account and its contents are a non-transferable license with no property interest and the Terms contain no death, estate, or inheritance provision, a Riot account and its purchased content cannot be inherited or retitled and are effectively forfeited at the account holder's death. There is no published Riot process for transferring an account or its Virtual Content to an heir, estate, or beneficiary.
