Estate planning as a OfferUp account holder

OfferUp is a buy-and-sell marketplace for local pickup. OfferUp retired nationwide shipping — new shipping listings stopped on September 23, 2025 and the shipping option was removed from existing listings on October 21, 2025 — so sales are now arranged in the app and paid in person between buyer and seller, and OfferUp does not hold the money for an ordinary sale. The estate-relevant parts of an account are the active listings that stay live until someone takes them down, the sales, purchase and message history that account deletion permanently removes, paid subscriptions that keep billing through the app store, and, for a seller who still had an unpaid balance from a pre-retirement shipping sale, a residual payout that lands in the deposit account on file. OfferUp does not publish a deceased-user or estate-transfer process, and its Terms of Service list transferring an account to another user as prohibited conduct.
OfferUp Inc. reviews transfer requests for OfferUp accounts on a case-by-case basis after the account holder's death. Approval is at the company's sole discretion, and documentation requirements must be met before any transfer is considered.
What happens at death
OfferUp does not publish a deceased-user, bereavement, or estate-succession process anywhere in its help centre or its Terms of Service. Section 7 (Prohibited Conduct) of the Terms lists "Transfer your account to another user" among the things a user will not do, and Section 9 (Suspension; Termination) reserves the right to "revoke or terminate your License to access or use the OfferUp Services for any reason without notice at OfferUp's sole discretion." There is no beneficiary designation and no account transfer, so the account itself does not pass to anyone. What OfferUp does document are three things an estate can act on. First, closure: an account can be deactivated (reversible, keeps the data) or permanently deleted, and the desktop deletion route runs through the Contact Us form under Data and Privacy without logging in. Second, records: OfferUp's consumer-privacy article documents requests to know what personal information it collects and to receive "a copy of the personal information we collect (in a portable format, if possible)," submitted through the same Contact Us form. Third, subscriptions: neither deactivating nor deleting the account stops a paid subscription, which is billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play and can only be cancelled there. Because none of these is framed as an estate process and OfferUp reviews such requests individually through support, the policy is case-by-case rather than a documented entitlement. Since nationwide shipping was retired, OfferUp holds no funds for an ordinary sale; only a seller with an unpaid balance from a pre-retirement shipping sale has money still to come. OfferUp holds that balance until a deposit method is added to the account, so for an estate it is a question to put to OfferUp: how it will release the balance to the estate.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. OfferUp's help centre states that from September 23, 2025 the shipping option could no longer be selected when posting new items, and that on October 21, 2025 the shipping option was removed from existing items that had no active offer or shipping transaction in progress, with in-progress transactions completed as usual. Selling continues locally through in-person meetups. OfferUp says it has no plans to bring nationwide shipping back at this time. This matters to an estate because it means OfferUp is not holding sale proceeds for a recent sale.
