Planning ahead for your Instacart Shopper earnings
Maplebear Inc. (dba Instacart) earnings cannot be transferred and have no beneficiary option — here is what you can do while the account is active

Because Maplebear Inc. (dba Instacart) reviews transfer requests on a case-by-case basis, there is no guarantee that earnings will be transferred after death. Lifetime planning reduces dependence on that outcome.
How to protect your Instacart Shopper earnings
Here are 5 steps to protect and manage your Instacart Shopper earnings while the account is active:
Family sharing
Instacart does not offer family sharing, pooling, or co-ownership of a shopper account. The Shopper Application Terms prohibit transferring or sublicensing the Shopper App, and Section 11 of the Independent Contractor Agreement bars the contractor from assigning rights or delegating duties without Instacart's prior written consent. The only routine way to move money out is the shopper's own payout — the weekly direct deposit (Wednesday to Friday for the prior Monday to Sunday) or an Instant Cashout to a bank account or debit card — which lands in an account the shopper controls. Section 3.8 of the Agreement does allow a shopper to request that payments be made payable in the name of a sole proprietorship, trade, or other business entity.
Should you save your passwords for your family?
Some people store account passwords so a family member can sign in later. The practice has three practical limits:
- Two-factor authentication often blocks it. Most accounts require a second factor — a code sent to a phone, an authenticator app, a passkey, or a physical key. A saved password alone frequently does not grant access, and the recovery codes that would are easy to lose or let go stale.
- It usually conflicts with the platform's terms. Most operators prohibit account sharing and signing in as another person, including after a death. Stored credentials are not the operator's recognized access path, and using them can violate the terms of service.
- Operators provide other paths. Where an operator offers a designation tool — Apple's Legacy Contact, Google's Inactive Account Manager, a beneficiary designation — that mechanism grants access the operator recognizes. A password manager's own emergency-access or legacy feature passes credentials through a controlled process. Digital assets named in a will or trust give a fiduciary authority under each state's Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA).
Frequently asked questions
Record the account email and phone number for your executor, since Instacart has no documented estate or beneficiary process and the account cannot be assigned without Instacart's written consent. Note where earnings are sent — bank account, debit card, or Shopper Rewards account — so funds can be traced. Avoid letting a large unpaid balance build up at Instacart, because earnings taken by the weekly direct deposit or through Instant Cashout sit in an account you control. And keep your own copies of your earnings and tax records outside the app, since every published route to them needs your sign-in.
Instacart states that where a shopper chooses to be paid into a different account the Instant Cashout fee is $1.50, that weekly direct deposits to a bank account remain free, and that auto-payout to a Shopper Rewards account powered by Branch is at no cost. It matters to an estate only indirectly: money moved out of Instacart by any of those routes is money in an account your executor can reach through the bank, rather than a balance the estate has to claim from Instacart with no published procedure to follow.
An inventory listing the Instacart Shopper account lets a fiduciary identify it and act on it through the operator's official channels.
Instacart Shopper does not offer beneficiary designations, so there is no program-level mechanism for directing earnings to a specific person at death.
