An eBay account can represent significant accumulated value: seller feedback scores built over years (directly affecting sale prices and buyer trust), Top Rated Seller status, eBay Store subscriptions with established branding, managed payments balances, active listings, and purchase/sale history. For high-volume sellers, an eBay account with thousands of positive feedback ratings is a genuine business asset.

After a eBay account holder dies, eBay Inc. may transfer accounts to a designated recipient, but this is handled case by case. The outcome depends on the documentation provided and is entirely at eBay Inc.'s discretion.

What happens at death

eBay has a formal process for reporting a deceased member, documented at the help article "Reporting the death of an eBay member" (id=5574) with a dedicated form at ocswf.ebay.com/deceased-account-closure. The form requires a death certificate, contact details, relationship to the deceased, and the member's full name, birth date, death date, and username if known. For release of a positive account balance, eBay additionally requires a court order admitting the deceased's will into probate and/or a copy of the court order appointing the executor, plus the requestor's photo identification (passport or driver's license, with all information displayed). Sensitive fields on the ID (ID number, place of birth, nationality, date of issue, height, eye color, photo, and signature) may be hidden as long as the ID card remains recognizable as a valid form of ID. The same documentation is required to request closure of the account. The only documented outcome is account closure -- not account transfer or continued operation. The User Agreement prohibits transferring an eBay account "(including feedback) and user ID to another party without our consent," but no formal path to obtain consent for estate transfers is documented. Per the Payments Terms of Use, eBay may keep a portion of funds after account closure to cover refunds or disputes and returns unused amounts to the Linked Financial Account within 190 days of account closure, unless the law requires otherwise.

How to protect your eBay accounts

Transfer of accounts after death is not guaranteed under eBay Inc.'s terms. Lifetime planning offers a more reliable way to manage and share accounts while the account is active.

Here are 6 steps to protect and manage your eBay accounts while the account is active:

1
Document your eBay username, email, and password for your executor. With credentials, they can sign in directly and manage listings, ship orders, and access funds.
2
If you are a business seller: set up Team Access and grant a trusted person permissions in Seller Hub. They can manage listings and orders using their own eBay account. This is the closest thing to continuity planning eBay offers.
3
Understand that your feedback score is non-transferable. Years of built-up seller reputation (hundreds or thousands of positive reviews, Top Rated Seller status) cannot be transferred to a new account. If the estate must close the account and open a new one, all reputation is lost.
4
Keep your linked bank account information current. Managed payments funds are disbursed to the linked bank account. If the account is outdated, the estate will need to work with eBay to redirect funds.
5
For eBay Store subscriptions: be aware of early termination fees on yearly subscriptions. Consider monthly billing if estate planning is a concern.
6
Ship pending orders promptly or have a plan for someone to handle fulfillment. Unfulfilled orders result in Money Back Guarantee claims, and refunds are deducted from any remaining balance before disbursement to the estate.

Family sharing

eBay accounts are non-transferable, including feedback scores. eBay offers Team Access (formerly Multi-User Account Access) for business sellers, allowing the account owner to invite others to perform tasks in Seller Hub using their own eBay accounts with defined permissions. Team members never have access to personal, business, or bank information or to account administration and advanced settings -- they only see the Seller Hub sections the owner assigns. Team Access is available on every site where Seller Hub is live: the US, UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, and Spain. Team Access delegates cannot take ownership of the account, and if the account owner dies, the owner's login is required to modify or revoke permissions.

eBay does not support beneficiary designations. Unlike bank accounts or investment accounts, there is no way to formally name a beneficiary on this type of account.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Accounts inactive for approximately 6 months may receive a notification to sign in within 30 days. If no login occurs, the account may be deleted. The exact threshold is not officially published. Estate representatives should ensure periodic login to preserve the account.

Once an eBay account is permanently closed, all purchase history, sales history, and feedback are no longer accessible. Before closure, you can request a data export through eBay account settings by selecting "request your eBay data," which takes approximately one week to generate. This export can cover the full account lifetime. Estate representatives should request this data before initiating account closure, particularly for tax reporting purposes.
