For Talcott Resolution policyholders, estate planning comes down to one critical step: making sure the right beneficiaries are named on every policy. Insurance proceeds bypass probate entirely and go directly to whoever is listed—regardless of what a will says. When estate tax planning or controlled distributions are a factor, a trust can be named as beneficiary instead.
Talcott Resolution has 11 product types, and the estate transfer rules differ across them. Some support beneficiary designations, some can be retitled into a trust, and others will require probate if nothing is set up. Each is covered below.
- ANNUITY purchased BEFORE 2024 (Talcott Resolution, Hartford legacy, or Union Securities): the Annuity Service Center at https://annuities.talcottresolution.com/ (redirects to annuities.cognisurance.com/asc/Login.jsf)
- EverGuard Assurance 10, EverGuard Aspire, or EverStead MYGA (2026 products): the client portal at https://client.talcott.com/startsso
- LIFE INSURANCE: the Policy Services account at https://www.policyowner-services.com/ -- life policies are serviced by Prudential, not by Talcott directly
- Forms are behind a login at https://forms.talcottresolution.com/ (redirects to forms.cognisurance.com, the IPS Forms application) -- there is no public PDF, so call if you cannot sign in
- Complete the form with primary and contingent beneficiary information
- For trusts: provide the full legal trust name, the date of the trust, and trustee information
- Return the completed form by mail or fax (fax 860-380-3280)
Required Documents
- Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)
Special Requirements
- Talcott splits servicing by product and by purchase date. Annuities bought BEFORE 2024 (including Hartford legacy and Union Securities contracts) go to the Annuity Service Center at 1-800-862-6668; EverGuard and EverStead contracts go to the Talcott Retail Service Center at 1-855-342-5834; life insurance goes to Prudential at 1-800-243-5433 (traditional) or 1-800-231-5453 (variable). The two annuity groups even use different P.O. boxes
- Forms are behind a login. forms.talcottresolution.com redirects to the forms.cognisurance.com IPS Forms application; no beneficiary form is published as a public PDF, so call the line for your product if you cannot sign in
- When a non-natural owner (trust, corporation) owns an annuity, the non-natural owner is required to be the beneficiary
- Custodian-owned annuities require beneficiary changes through the custodian, not Talcott Resolution
- Once a legacy annuity has been ANNUITIZED it is serviced on a separate line (1-877-372-2935) and the payout follows the settlement option elected -- confirm whether a beneficiary change is still permitted on your contract
- Group benefit and Group Retiree Health coverage is serviced by The Hartford, not Talcott -- use the group benefits links on https://talcott.com/contact/
- Abbey Life Insurance Company of Canada policyholders and beneficiaries use a dedicated channel: abbeylife@talcottresolution.com
- Changes are effective on the date Talcott Resolution deems the request in good order
