With 6 products relevant to estate planning, SILAC policyholders need to understand how beneficiary designations control where proceeds go. These designations override a will, so the names on file with SILAC are what determine who receives the death benefit.

Beneficiary changes at SILAC can be made by mail and by phone. Accounts can also be linked to trusts through beneficiary designations to keep them out of probate entirely.

There are two sides to estate planning at SILAC: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. SILAC supports trust ownership of annuity contracts via the Annuitant-Ownership Service Form, available for download at https://media.silacins.com/annuity/annuitant_ownership_service_form.pdf. The trust must provide its full legal name, date of establishment, trustee names, physical street address, and Tax Identification Number (EIN). A Certification of Trust or copy of the trust document is required. If the owner is not a natural person, the form must be signed by the authorized representative with documentation of authorization. Trust-owned annuities held by non-natural persons may lose tax-deferral advantages unless an exception applies under IRC Section 72(u); consult a tax advisor before purchasing or transferring an annuity into trust ownership.

The Elevation and Elevation Plus riders are optional add-ons available on the Teton and Denali FIA product lines. Elevation provides enhanced liquidity by increasing free annual withdrawals to 10% of account value and adding cumulative free withdrawal provisions. Elevation Plus adds an upfront premium bonus on premiums received during the first policy year, in addition to Elevation liquidity benefits. An annual spread applies during the withdrawal charge period. For trust-owned annuities, these riders can be useful when the trust requires regular distributions, as the 10% annual free withdrawal amount is available without surrender charges.
