Estate planning with Securian Financial policies centers on beneficiary designations—the single most important step for ensuring life insurance proceeds and annuity benefits reach the intended recipients without probate involvement. Unlike bank or brokerage accounts, insurance products are not retitled into trusts; instead, trusts are named as beneficiaries when estate tax planning or controlled distributions are needed.

Securian Financial has 13 product types, and the estate transfer rules differ across them. Some support beneficiary designations, some can be retitled into a trust, and others will require probate if nothing is set up. Each is covered below.

Update primary beneficiaries:
  • Provide full legal names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and relationships
  • Assign percentage allocations totaling 100%

Add contingent beneficiaries if desired:
  • Provide the same identifying information as primary beneficiaries
  • Assign their own percentage allocations totaling 100%

For trusts: provide the full legal trust name, date established, and tax ID number (EIN)

Special Requirements

  • Trusts, individuals, charities, and estates can all be named as beneficiaries
  • Primary and contingent beneficiaries allowed with percentage allocations totaling 100%
  • Provide full legal name, relationship, mailing address, email, phone, date of birth, and Social Security number for each beneficiary
  • Some states require spousal consent to name a non-spouse beneficiary
  • Completing the Beneficiary Change Request form revokes all prior beneficiary designations
  • Group life beneficiary changes may require coordination with employer HR department
  • Irrevocable beneficiary designations or transferred policy ownership may restrict changes without beneficiary consent
  • A special needs trust can be named as beneficiary to provide for a dependent without affecting their government assistance eligibility
