Nuveen offers 9 consumer investment accounts that interact with estate planning in distinct ways. Of those, 9 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. Understanding the transfer methods available for each account type helps families keep assets out of probate and ensure they pass to the right people.

At Nuveen, beneficiary designations are managed by mail and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

There are two sides to estate planning at Nuveen: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Only if the shares were registered directly on the fund's share register, which Computershare maintains — mail goes to Nuveen Funds c/o Computershare, PO Box 43006, Providence, RI 02940-3006. Most closed-end fund shares are not held that way. They were bought on the NYSE and sit in a brokerage account in street name, and in that case the shares settle through the BROKER: the brokerage firm holds the record of ownership, and the fund and its transfer agents have no idea who the individual owner is. Look at the statement. If it comes from a brokerage firm, start there and do not call Nuveen.

A non-IRA Nuveen mutual fund account held directly with the fund can be re-registered into the name of the trust — call Nuveen Funds at 800-257-8787 and ask the transfer agent for the re-registration paperwork; expect a medallion signature guarantee. Nuveen does not publish a trust-registration form or a standing document checklist, so confirm what trust documentation the transfer agent wants before mailing anything. An IRA is different: a Nuveen Funds IRA is custodied by UMB Bank, N.A. and cannot be owned by a trust during your life. The trust can only be named as beneficiary, which the custodial agreement expressly allows.
