Estate planning at Mr. Cooper

How to protect 4 Mr. Cooper accounts — file claims through Mr. Cooper's Payoff Department (payoff quotes and payoff funds for an estate or successor)

Brand change

Rocket Companies closed its acquisition of Mr. Cooper Group on October 1, 2025 and is rebranding Mr. Cooper's servicing under the Rocket umbrella. mrcooper.com remains the live servicing site and the deceased-borrower process is unchanged: Mr. Cooper tells clients to keep making payments to Mr. Cooper and to keep using the same online account, while statements and emails move to the Rocket Mortgage brand. The site footer now reads "Rocket Mortgage, LLC, NMLS #3030." Effective October 2025.

Mr. Cooper is now part of Rocket Mortgage. The procedures below reflect Mr. Cooper's accounts during the transition. View the Rocket Mortgage estate planning page.

Mr. Cooper services loans, which means at death the focus is settling what is owed. The estate notifies Mr. Cooper, provides documentation of authority, and works through payoff or the loan-specific options available to survivors.

Mr. Cooper has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Only after Mr. Cooper has confirmed you as a successor in interest or as the estate representative. Then a payoff quote can be requested inside the online account (some loans are eligible for an instant quote), by opening a Message Center ticket, through the automated phone system at 833-685-2565, or by mailing a short letter with the loan number, property address, and your current contact information to Mr. Cooper, Attn: Payoff Department, 8950 Cypress Waters Blvd., Coppell, TX 75019. Mr. Cooper discloses a preparation fee of up to $25 for each payoff quote statement it generates, plus up to $25 more for expedited delivery of a quote sent via web. The payoff itself must be made in certified funds — wire transfer, money order, or cashier's check — and Mr. Cooper states it does not accept personal checks, certified personal checks, or cash. Wire instructions, including the account number generated for the loan, come on the payoff quote statement itself. If Mr. Cooper services a second lien on the same home, get a payoff figure for that lien too; both have to be cleared at sale.
