How to name beneficiaries and fund a trust at Mid Atlantic Trust

Covers 10 retirement, and 1 investment accounts — beneficiaries can be updated by phone

Brand change

Mid Atlantic Trust Company now does business as American Trust Custody. Same legal entity, same South Dakota trust charter, same contacts — statements, checks, and 1099-R forms may carry either name. The company website is americancustody.com; midatlantictrust.com no longer resolves and macg.com redirects there.

The procedures below reflect Mid Atlantic Trust's accounts. Account servicing may transfer as the change takes effect.

Estate planning for Mid Atlantic Trust retirement retirement accounts revolves around beneficiary designations. These designations—not a will—control who receives the account balance at death. For IRAs and employer-sponsored plans, the beneficiary designation also determines the tax treatment of inherited distributions, making it a decision with both legal and financial implications.

Mid Atlantic Trust has 11 product types, and the estate transfer rules differ across them. Some support beneficiary designations on tax-advantaged accounts, some can be retitled into a trust, and others will require probate if nothing is set up. Each is covered below.

Collective Investment Trust (CIT)
1
Plan accounts: call your plan's third-party administrator or recordkeeper and ask for the beneficiary designation form. If you cannot identify them, call MATC Cashiering at (800) 693-7800 and ask who administers the plan
2
IRA accounts (including an Auto Rollover IRA): call MATC IRA Services at (888) 461-2224 or email autorollover@macg.com and ask for the IRA beneficiary designation form
3
Have the plan name, your full name, and the last four digits of your Social Security number ready — that is the information MATC asks for to locate an account

Special Requirements

  • Mid Atlantic Trust has NO branches and no walk-in service — there is nowhere to bring a form in person
  • MATC is the custodian and holds no participant-level information for employer-sponsored plans: the beneficiary designation lives with the plan's recordkeeper or TPA
  • For ERISA-covered plans, a married participant generally must name their spouse as primary beneficiary unless the spouse signs a written waiver, per the plan document
  • A trust can be named as beneficiary of a retirement account held at MATC; an IRA or plan account can never be retitled INTO a trust
  • MATC's Customer Identification Program notice states that a trust or other legal entity may have to provide its principal place of business, EIN, and trust agreement, and that an account "may be restricted or closed" if MATC cannot obtain and verify that information — so a trust named as beneficiary needs its EIN and trust document ready before the claim, not after
  • An Auto Rollover IRA was opened BY a former plan rather than by the account holder, so there is frequently no beneficiary on file at all — check before assuming there is one
