The key to protecting your J.P. Morgan investment accounts is making sure each one has a transfer mechanism in place—either a beneficiary designation or trust ownership. Without one, the account goes through probate, adding time, cost, and court involvement for your family.

Each of J.P. Morgan's 7 investment accounts has different rules for how it transfers at death. The sections below explain the options for each.

Navigate to Investments, then select Beneficiaries

Select the account to update

Add or edit beneficiary designations:
  • Click "Add," "Edit," or "Delete" beneficiary designations
  • Enter beneficiary name, relationship, date of birth, SSN, and percentage allocation
  • For trusts as beneficiary: provide trust name, date established, and EIN

Complete account-specific forms:
  • For brokerage TOD: review and sign the Transfer on Death Agreement electronically

Confirm and submit designations

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • TOD is not available to residents of Louisiana; all other states that have enacted TOD legislation are eligible
  • The Transfer on Death Agreement requires a notary public to complete the identity verification section before submission
  • The IRA Beneficiary Update Request requires a notary public to complete Section 6 (Identity Verification) before submission
  • No beneficiary designation is effective until the TOD Agreement is received and accepted by J.P. Morgan Securities at the Chicago processing address
  • If no beneficiaries claim TOD account assets within 6 months of death, the personal representative of the estate may instruct JPMS to transfer the assets to the estate
  • Primary and contingent beneficiary shares must each total 100% with no more than 2 decimal places per beneficiary
