Janney has 13 investment accounts, each with different rules for what happens when the account holder dies. Of those, 13 can name a trust as beneficiary or be retitled into a trust. The right combination of beneficiary designations and trust ownership can keep the entire portfolio out of probate.

Janney lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch and by mail, typically taking 15-30 minutes with advisor. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle brokerage accounts into a trust.

Janney provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

Both, depending on the account. For personal trusts, Janney's estate planning page says it can recommend appropriate trusts, work with your attorney to create or change a trust, provide custody and a fiduciary investment platform, apply investment strategies, administer distributions, and provide record keeping "through our trust company partners" — so trust administration itself runs through partner trust companies, while Janney holds and manages the assets. For retirement accounts, Janney's IRA disclosure statement names Janney Trust Co (1717 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103) as the custodian. That custodial agreement carries an estate trap worth knowing: if no beneficiary designation is on file, none of the named beneficiaries survive, or the custodian cannot locate them after a reasonable search, the IRA balance is payable to the depositor's estate — pulling a probate-free asset into probate.
