How your First Tech accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, First Tech national membership through 1,700+ tech employer partners. Over 50 branches (31 First Tech + 23 DCU) across CA, CO, GA, ID, MA, NH, OR, TX, and WA. Merged with DCU effective January 1, 2026, operating as two divisions during integration. Online and phone banking available nationwide. Surcharge-free access at nearly 30,000 CO-OP Network ATMs. With 26 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

First Tech lets account holders update beneficiary designations in branch, by mail, and by phone, typically taking 15-30 minutes in branch; 1-2 weeks by mail. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

First Tech provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

You need the complete trust document or a Certificate of Trust, the Fiduciary Membership Application (Form F-00002), government-issued photo ID for each trustee, the trust EIN (or settlor SSN for revocable trusts), and an opening deposit. The trust must state the names of all beneficiaries per First Tech bylaws.

Yes. Where state law permits, First Tech accepts Small Estate Affidavits as an alternative to formal probate when the total assets involved are below the state's threshold. This provides a simplified process for smaller estates without requiring full Letters Testamentary or Administration from probate court.

First Tech offers wealth management through Addison Avenue Investment Services, the largest credit union investment program in the United States with over $3.7 billion in assets under management. Financial Advisors provide estate planning, retirement planning, tax-efficient investing, and trust services. Contact Addison Avenue at 855-744-8585 ext. 2 or 800-988-0134, or meet in person at a First Tech Experience Center.

Most personal checking and savings accounts can be titled to a trust, including Rewards Checking, Premier Rewards Checking, Dividends Rewards Checking, Carefree Checking, First Checking Plus, Membership Savings, Rewards Savings, Premier Rewards Savings, Carefree Savings, Instant Access Savings, and Share Certificates. As of January 1, 2026, Rewards Checking accepts trust and fiduciary accounts in addition to personal accounts. HSA accounts and Start Up (youth) accounts cannot be titled to a trust. Business and organization accounts are not eligible.

The organizations legally combined on January 1, 2026, and operate as two divisions (First Tech and DCU) under the First Tech Federal Credit Union name during integration. Day-to-day banking has not changed. As a single federally insured credit union, aggregated share balances across both divisions are combined for NCUA insurance purposes up to $250,000. If you hold accounts at both divisions with combined balances exceeding the $250,000 NCUA limit, the excess may not be covered. Visit firsttechfed.com/merger for transition updates.

Carefree Checking and Carefree Savings are available for existing accounts only as of 2026. They are not currently offered for new accounts or account conversions. Existing Carefree Checking and Carefree Savings account holders can continue using their accounts. Members seeking new checking or savings products should consider Dividends Rewards Checking, First Checking Plus, Rewards Checking, or Membership Savings.
