How to name beneficiaries and fund a trust at Enterprise Bank

Covers 6 deposit, 2 retirement, and 2 lending accounts — beneficiaries must be updated in-branch

Brand change

Enterprise Bancorp, Inc. merged into Independent Bank Corp. and Enterprise Bank and Trust Company merged into Rockland Trust Company, with Rockland Trust the surviving bank, at a legal closing effective July 1, 2025 (Independent Bank Corp. deal-close press release, SEC EX-99.1). Customer accounts converted the weekend of October 11 and transitioned to Rockland Trust on Tuesday, October 14, 2025; all former Enterprise Bank branches now operate as Rockland Trust locations and the routing number is 011304478. The Enterprise Bank brand no longer operates. Existing POD beneficiary designations, IRA beneficiary designations, and trust account titling remain in effect, and a death claim on a former Enterprise Bank account is handled by Rockland Trust today: call the Customer Information Center at 508-732-7072 or write to Rockland Trust, ATTN: Deposit Services, 288 Union Street, Rockland, MA 02370. Effective July 2025.

Enterprise Bank is now part of Rockland Trust. The procedures below reflect Enterprise Bank's accounts during the transition. View the Rockland Trust estate planning page.

The key to protecting your Enterprise Bank accounts is making sure each one has a transfer mechanism in place—either a beneficiary designation or trust ownership. Without one, the account goes through probate, adding time, cost, and court involvement for your family.

With 10 product types, Enterprise Bank offers a range of transfer options. Some accounts support Payable on Death (POD) designations, others can be retitled into a trust, and some require probate if no beneficiary is designated. The sections below break down each step.

1
Visit any Rockland Trust branch (including former Enterprise Bank locations) with a valid government-issued photo ID.
2
Request to add or update a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary designation:
  • Provide beneficiary full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number
  • Specify relationship to account holder
  • Designate primary and contingent beneficiaries with percentage allocations totaling 100%
3
Sign the completed POD beneficiary designation form.
4
Keep a copy of the signed form for your records.

Required Documents

  • Trust name, date established, and tax ID (EIN or SSN)

Special Requirements

  • POD designations override any contrary provisions in a will.
  • IRA beneficiary designations require a separate form from the POD form used for deposit accounts.
  • Named beneficiaries have no rights to the account during the account owner's lifetime.
  • For joint accounts, the POD designation typically takes effect only after all joint owners have died.
  • Existing Enterprise Bank POD designations remained in effect through the Rockland Trust transition. Contact Rockland Trust at 508-732-7072 to confirm designations are properly recorded.
