How your Cobalt CU accounts transfer at death depends on how each one is set up. As a membership-based credit union, Cobalt CU membership open to individuals who live, work, worship, attend school, or regularly do business in eligible counties across 16 counties in Iowa and Nebraska, including Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, Saunders, and Washington counties in Nebraska and Carroll, Crawford, Harrison, Ida, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie, Sac, and Shelby counties in Iowa. Immediate family members of current members qualify. Employees and retirees of SpartanNash grocery stores are also eligible. Businesses and other entities located within eligible counties also qualify. $5 minimum deposit in a Share Savings account establishes membership. 25 free-standing and retail branch locations across Nebraska (Bellevue, Blair, Elkhorn, Fremont, Lincoln, Omaha, Papillion, Plattsmouth) and Iowa (Council Bluffs, Denison). With 17 account types, the transfer rules vary—getting the right designations in place now prevents delays and court involvement later.

At Cobalt CU, beneficiary designations are managed in branch, by mail, and by phone. Accounts can also be retitled into a trust to keep them out of probate entirely.

There are two sides to estate planning at Cobalt CU: setting things up while you're alive, and the process survivors follow after a death.
