CarMax Auto Finance is a auto finance company, so the estate planning question is about a debt, not an asset. When the borrower dies, the estate must notify CarMax Auto Finance and resolve the outstanding balance—through payoff, assumption, discharge, or surrender depending on the loan—rather than name a beneficiary.

CarMax Auto Finance provides specific procedures for both proactive estate planning and filing claims after a death.

Frequently asked questions

CarMax Auto Finance holds a lien on the financed vehicle's title until the loan is paid in full. Request the payoff amount by signing in at carmaxautofinance.com or calling 1-800-925-3612, then pay the balance from estate funds, life insurance, or the proceeds of a sale. After the final payment posts, CarMax Auto Finance releases its lien. In states that use an electronic lien and title (ELT) process, the title can take up to 60 days to reach the owner from the state DMV, and the owner may need to contact the DMV to complete the release.

Only a buyer or co-buyer on the original retail installment contract may be listed on the title; a co-buyer cannot be removed and a third party cannot be added. An heir who wants to keep the vehicle generally pays off the loan and retitles the vehicle through the estate, or refinances the balance with another lender in their own name. CarMax Auto Finance does not itself offer refinancing, and there is no penalty for paying off the account early. Keep the account current in the meantime, because the vehicle secures the loan and can be repossessed if the account falls behind.

Send monthly payments to CarMax Auto Finance, P.O. Box 6045, Carol Stream, IL 60197-6045, or pay online at carmaxautofinance.com or through the CarMax app. Keeping the account current matters because finance charges accrue daily on a simple-interest contract and missed payments can lead to repossession. Final payoffs go to a different address: CarMax Auto Finance, Attn: Payoff Department, P.O. Box 440609, Kennesaw, GA 30160-0511 by U.S. mail, or 225 Chastain Meadows Court Suite 210, Kennesaw, GA 30144 by express or overnight delivery.

No. CarMax Auto Finance states that it does not currently offer refinancing. An heir who wants to keep the vehicle and lower the payment or rate would need to refinance the balance with another financial institution in their own name and use that loan to pay off CarMax Auto Finance. There is no penalty for paying off the account early.

If the estate does not intend to keep the vehicle, it can sell the vehicle and use the proceeds to pay off the loan, or surrender the vehicle to CarMax Auto Finance. Any remaining balance after the vehicle is sold is a debt of the estate. Call customer service at 1-800-925-3612 to confirm the current balance, the payoff amount, and the surrender process.

Any optional protection product, such as Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP), purchased when the vehicle was financed is described in the original retail installment contract. Whether such coverage applies depends on whether it was purchased and on its terms. If the vehicle is declared a total loss, CarMax Auto Finance asks that you call 1-800-925-3612 to discuss the situation. Review the original financing documents or contact customer service to confirm whether any protection product is on the account.
