Frequently asked questions

Certificate terms range from 3 months to 8 years. A Bump-a-Rate feature is available upon request, allowing a one-time rate change during the term. Early withdrawal penalties vary by certificate term: for terms of 1 year or less, the penalty is the greater of 1% of the amount withdrawn or all dividends for 90 days on the amount withdrawn; for terms over 1 year but less than 36 months, the greater of 1.5% or 180 days of dividends; for terms of 36 months or more, the greater of 2% or 180 days of dividends. Certificates auto-renew at maturity for the same term at the current dividend rate. Contact the credit union before maturity to prevent automatic renewal.

Yes. Black Hills FCU offers HSA Savings and HSA Certificate accounts for members with qualifying high-deductible health plans. Unused funds roll over year to year. HSA accounts are federally insured by NCUA up to $250,000. HSA accounts may not be pledged, transferred, or assigned, and cannot be titled to a trust. HSA beneficiary designations are separate from deposit account POD designations. Deposits cannot be made to HSA accounts through mobile deposit.

Yes. Deposit accounts such as checking, savings, money market, and share certificates can be retitled to a revocable living trust. Visit a branch with your trust agreement or Certificate of Trust, government-issued ID for all trustees, and the trust EIN or grantor SSN. IRAs and HSAs cannot be titled to a trust, but you can name a trust as the beneficiary on those accounts. South Dakota has favorable trust laws with no state income tax on trust income for properly structured trusts and allows perpetual trusts under SDCL 55-1.

Yes. While IRA accounts cannot be titled directly to a trust, a trust can be named as the beneficiary on both Traditional IRA and Roth IRA savings and certificate accounts. Contact member services or visit a branch to update your IRA beneficiary designation. Consult a tax advisor for the implications of naming a trust as an IRA beneficiary, as distribution rules differ for trust beneficiaries compared to individual beneficiaries.
