BECU offers 19 accounts, each with its own rules for what happens when a member dies. As a membership-based credit union, BECU primarily serves Washington state residents. Membership also available to those who live, work, worship, or attend school in Washington state. Select Oregon counties (Benton, Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Multnomah, Polk, Tillamook, Washington, Yamhill) and Idaho counties (Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Clearwater, Idaho, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce, Shoshone) are also eligible. Some transfer automatically to a named beneficiary, others can be held in a trust, and a few may require probate if no plan is in place.

Managing beneficiaries at BECU is straightforward—changes can be made online, in branch, and by mail, typically taking 10-15 minutes to complete; up to 10 business days for processing. Trust funding is also available, allowing families to retitle accounts into the name of a revocable living trust.

BECU has documented procedures for both preparing accounts during your lifetime and handling claims when an account holder passes away.

Frequently asked questions

Eligible account types include Member Share Savings, Savings, Checking, Money Market, and Certificate of Deposit accounts. However, the Member Share Savings account itself cannot be converted; a new trust savings account must be opened instead. IRA accounts cannot be converted to trust accounts. Checking accounts tied to an active line of credit are also ineligible for conversion. The trust tax ID must match the primary owner tax ID on the personal accounts being converted. Trust accounts do not qualify for Member Advantage rates, and a separate online banking login is required to view trust accounts.

Yes. BECU Trust Services is a trade name used by Members Trust Company, a federal thrift regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. It offers trust administration, estate settlement, investment management, foundations and endowments services, and the FlexIRA product that combines IRA tax benefits with trust protections. Contact BECU Trust Services at 206-812-5176 or becutrust@becu.org, or submit an inquiry through the trust services contact form at becu.org/forms/trust-services-contact-us. Trust service products are not NCUA or FDIC insured.

BECU does not allow percentage allocations on deposit account beneficiary designations. Every beneficiary listed on the Designate Beneficiaries form (Form 6851) receives an equal share of the account. If you want an unequal split, that cannot be done through the beneficiary form; you would instead use separate accounts or a trust. A maximum of seven beneficiaries can be named per form, and submitting a new form removes and replaces all prior designations, so every beneficiary you wish to keep must be relisted. IRA accounts use a separate IRA beneficiary designation process.
